OK, so the Super Budget 454 had parts gathered, got built, is in the Elky, actually fired the other day, had a few issues I corrected. Tried an outing after lunch, a trip back to work in the Elky. Elky spewed PS fluid all over the DS header....trailed white smoke :o....turned around, a 15-point turn without PS ....got her home and took the S-10 back.

After work, diagnosed the pressure line at the pump was loose. Got R Dun in a few minutes. Took Elky around the block then to Scott's in Steilacoom. Then back down Steilacoom Blvd to Schuck's, then home. No issues.:D:D:D

Now to continue the pace of upgrades
1. Exhaust work....get the leaks stopped, one on pass header plus all the rest. Pretty throaty at not much above idle. I have those other mufflers from Kevin.... Even with the ext leaks, at idle, roughly what the 350 was and certainly quieter than RatVette.
2. Suspension: Get the rear susp upgraded (rear springs are in) and the BBC frt coils on. Nose is in the dirt. Need to install the shocks.
3. Tuning.....known carb made start-up and first road rides easy. I'm thinking race days the 800 will be coming with me......
4. Slicks

Aside from the header and other exhaust noise.....the idle is way smoother than the RatVette...but you hear a little somethin' under the hood

Power? Plenty :)
Just wrong time of day for this.....6pm the roads are too busy

Converter: Hughes GM25 is an improvement

Burnout pic: Probably next outing...gotta change the break-in oil

Pics: Later tonight

George you should be "VERY" proud at what you have accomplished . Now you have all winter to work the bugs out and get your Elky ready for the track this coming spring. I do think we will have a good race when we finally square off against each other ;). I think you mite have a few more tricks up your sleeve so we will see about the outcome (BB vs. SB I think you will be able to take me, but what fun :D).

Chad,
Local TC guy "Propest" John got his cowl ind going on his 1970 Elky a few weeks ago.
Just gotta hook-up with him for the tutorial. Terrell, the co-worker seen in the store-front pic has a "12-sec" 383-powered 84 Camaro ragtop. He liked the BBC and the CI stuff.

BrIan,
I'm thinking at least an inch, maybe two up in the front.......rear down an inch.
I do not like the Elky 'sag' look with ass-down...but the nose down like a bloodhound is not cuttin' it.
How does it run?
On the primaries, it is faster then the 350 with the 4-v wired open!
I did a few blips of the throttle then let the engine slow the car down, seat the rings.
Not a puff of smoke at all......
Will pull the plugs when I change the oil....

Greg,
As mentioned elsewhere....
I plan on having all the necessary suspension bolt-ins before the frost thaws.
Slicks, not DRs
The 60' battle is critical above any power gains.
I believe I have the grunt and hopefully hook my way into the 1.6 60'
I do expect 1.8s initially and low 13s at 105 and later in the year 1.6, high 12s at 106mph.
I know you have been taking your "Tree Wizard" pills and RTs will certainly factor at our meetings. But when the Elky's power gets to the ground, I'll be thinking upgrades.
I guess I am a year or more behind the power curve......damn Berg done gave away so much tech advice and so much cash spent in 2008 that I'll be hard-pressed to beat anybody!

I had seen a vid of one of these cams in a 454 at idle.
Sounded like it had some whack to it.....but then, Twins Fan is running a bit more CR and dunno what pipes...
Though I have some bad ext leaks....I'm thinking that at low RPMs, this thing could well be mistaken for my 350's old sound when all is tightened/non-leaking.

Even at a modest 226* dur @ .050" .533" lift and 108 LSA this cam is HUGE compared to the stock piece at 214 int./218 exh* 0.461 int./0.480 exh. lift" 115 LSA
My engine is optimized for midrange power, fair manners, decent mpg.....well suited to the 3.43 gears and the 2500 stall.
But after all, who REALLY expects an Elky with a WELFARE engine in it to run strong....

Just in from Seattle with an S-10 load of closet inserts, glass slider closet door set etc from Ikea. Unloading stuff, the doggie escaped.... Finally captured his shaggy-ash 10 minutes later. Meanwhile, thinking that soon I'd be changing the Elky's oil etc...
Work called....asked me to come in on a day off....

I know, another delay....but yet better in the long run...more car cash.
I might just get new wheels in less than two years RAMBO

So, unloaded the last of the stuff than gave Doggie-Boy a bath....
Off to work....
Will return with an oil filter or two and some Chevron Delo 15w-40

Update:
Streets wet....
Warmed the Elky. Timing was at 8 degs during the break-in....now set at 16 deg. Let her cool up some then changed the oil. I tightened the collector flanges, trans pan, oil pressure sender, went over the oil pan bolts etc then put the new filter on and the rest of the new oil. The (old) oil looked great :D.

Nothing has cured the driver side flange header leak. Went to the Schuck's warehouse, got some thick SPECTRE round hole header gaskets.....the thin MR GASKET ones did not quite do the trick....driver side has a bad leak. Waiting for the car to cool.

With the streets wet...nearly every stopsign or light coulda been a burnout opportunity. While driving, you can't tell what is under the hood. Just seems like a nice engine with headers and a bad exhaust leak. When out of the car, standing behind the tailgate, you can hear some rumble:boring: but not much..... Come dry street day....some Ford or whatever will get a nice surprise look at my tailgate. Whole lotta difference between 8 and 16 degrees initial timing  and the 8 deg test runs were not shabby at all:beers:

I just put a mega thick SPECTRE #420 header flange gasket in. It helped some but I'm still leaking exhaust vicinity the underside of tube 7. The MR Gasket take-out has a larger hole than the SPECTRE unit, so the bead inside the flange was barely biting the edge of the #7 previously. The new unit, should been a big bite and no issues yet still have the noise.
Bolts are ARP header units with 5/16" heads (no skimping here) and I tightened the snot outa them with ratchet and or wrench-locked-on wrench for leverage.

So I had her out again to still hear the leak.
Rolling at 30, dropped her into 2nd....just touched the gas...WWWWWWWWWRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Still in gear, oil pressure good and when I figured out in .025 sec that it was my poor tires and not my engine dying, I was all :hurray::hurray::hurray::hurray: Couldn't do that with the 350 down hill with a tailwind!

Ben,

I had called to razz ya about your proposed 'improvements' to your Elky.
What I recollect is that once you saw my engine actually going together you started plotting improvements....nervous? Or is this just to catch the other guys, not get left behind at 12.96?
How are we gonna do the "RatTrophy" if you start hacking into your 454HO? I'd at least like a shot at ya at the first track day......

Anybody got some cool ideas to get these headers to seal?
I must say that these old Hedman units sit up pretty high and go in and out easily.....

I used percy alumium crush gaskets that are reusable. No leaks for me:D
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=PHP%2D66019&N=700+303932+115&autoview=sku

I also cut in between each header so each one is tightened separately.

FRYNTYR
Oct 31st, 08, 7:34 PM
Those header flanges are pretty thin, Likely bowed enough that the flange by the bolt is very tight and the center doesn't have the same press. I've added thick, wide, 3/8 grade eight washers under the heads and has really helped when using the thin flanged headers seal up. It's possible that if it is bowed, to pull the header off and straighten it out, then put it back in with the washers and be fine.

66 Buick Special
Oct 31st, 08, 7:54 PM
Is it possible he has the same issue I did when I went to the thin copper header gaskets? That the bolts are bottoming out due to the thin flange (in his case) and that they aren't clamping enough because of that?

kettbo
Oct 31st, 08, 8:59 PM
Buick Greg, Darryl, and Kevin,

I do believe that I have not bottomed-out. That usually has a different sensation. Will take a very critical look at this, easiest problem.
But they were BBC specific bolts, ARP kit.
The old MrG header gasket was leaking past the bottom on #7. Thought about saws-all activity and cutting the flange too.
Would be easy-enough to pull the new gasket, 15 min of run time and do a CSI to it.

Hmmmm, I still have the cut-off wheel Dennis loaned me for the exhaust.....
that little gem will make short work of any header flange////
Drats, getting dark and the little ghosts and ghouls will be arriving....
This is very likely gonna fix things...
Doc you said 3/8 hole, wide body, thick, Grade 8 flat washers. Interesting.....can't do this on SBC...but works for BBC...

Dennis says really sounds like ext leak....but is concerned I could possibly have a ext valve too tight...hanging open slightly...causing that noise..... Doubt it, set the rockers at 1 turn (center) and watched the lifter plungers move..... Engine runs too smooth, no miss or glitch....

Dennis also added the BBC and CI air cleaner and general clean-up and quick detail job...hardly looks like the same engine compartment!

George, is that the header that you had to adjust? Could it be still hitting on something that is keeping it from going flat against the head?

George, is that the header that you had to adjust? Could it be still hitting on something that is keeping it from going flat against the head?

Brian,

Same side...#1 was hitting the Engine tower mounting bolt head.....
I see nothing else hitting. But...there could be...nothing obvious as I've been all in there several times very recently and even today. Before I get the cutter out on the flange, will have a close look....again.

Could be that I may actually have to SPEND SOME MONEY on new headers if I do not find something or the 'cures' mentioned above do not work. Would go Hedman as this is what I have. Thing is, the ones out there have the ball and flange....whereas I have the three bolt 'traditional' collectors....that actually line-up. So, hope is I can get these bad boys to work....

The last time I bought gaskets for mine, I got some graphite looking things and they work really well. They're really thick and have lasted aboot three years now. Are ya sure the flanges aren't warped? Could you file or grind them flat?

Stock axles, had a little wear on the splines but going with it anyway....would be a good backup if a 12 bolt breaks.

*Edit* I really want a Dana 60 under there, someday....problem is the ears on the pumpkin, I'd like them cast with the pumpkin. I guess that means Strange S60 and about $2k. Would retain my 10/12 bolt disc brakes though, so I'd have to have them put on a GM brake flange, and the F&*D bearing setup.

Now that you have me thinking, got a picture of your rear diff. jig? I'm curious how you are bolting it rigid? I'm up for trying anything and testing my welding skills with the recent Miller Mig purchase during the summer. After all, CPP screwed up my front brake brackets, so I had to cut them apart, adjust, and re-weld them back together to fit:yes:....perfectly if I do say so myself.

Hey George, exhaust leak fixed yet? Any dry pavement burnouts yet?

Doc,

Nope, no burn-outs....weather not cooperating......either working or otherwise not available during the infrequent sunny weather here...
I was out with the wife this AM in the little Scion....drizzles.
Heading home, the sun started to come out. Got ready for work, was gonna take the Elky and camera...heading out the door at 1 today and the showers returned. Get to work, half an hour later nice sunshine....more rain by the time I took lunch. I more than anyone am feeling the frustration....
There will be a picture taken fer sure.....

I am gonna drop that DS header to cut the flange btwn pipe 5 and 7, look for leaks, check the weld bead, etc. Fix if possible. If it still does not seal.....then will be dealing with Mike P or Schuck's for replacement headers..... I still have those ext manifolds from gotago....:noway:

#2 Christine has not been home from UW in weeks. She approved the Weld Wheels on 'her' Elky. She gasped when she saw the underhood changes. "That engine sure fills up the space in there!" "Cool air cleaner!":D

I even like the powder coated touch, that'd be the first thing I have ever owned that powder coated...

LIAR! That sway bar sure looks powdercoated...

:noway:Nope, both my sway bars are painted....how do I know? Because both of 'em have some paint chipped off:D. I've never had anything powdercoated, just paint it myself(re-painted the front one after shipping).

OK, but that wipes off:D. A lot of that dust is from media blasting with walnut shells, as well as body shop dust. I suppose I could say everybody has some powder coating in that context about the dust. I'd rather have dust than grease all over the undercarriage...man I hate dealing with oil/grease covered stuff.

OK George the weather looks clear for the next three days. It's time for you to find out what the BB can do and leave your mark on some poor unexpected pavement :D.

Greg,

What on earth make you think that I have not already laid several patches of rubber...
Ahhhhhhhh, you want proof, eh?
I will see Dennis tomorrow, burn some hides....and have him take a pic.....
Are you working days? Afternoon/evening? Wanna see a firepower demonstration?

RAMBO,
Mondo rake job of leaves today. Pile bigger than my S-10 in the driveway and 4 large piles under the Oak out front....I had the pressure washer out today afterwards. Sprayed/cleaned the RV pad....along the rt side of the house

Much to my surprise, my old worn-out coils turned-up....different pile..further back along the RV pad. As it takes all of 30 min to install coils once the car is in the air, will slip the old ones in tomorrow to check the stance.

No test outing yet today. I am cleaning up after removal of the offending driver side header. Not an easy job like the passenger side having to get the Elky SKY HIGH and remove the dvr side MM bolt, jack the engine up.

With the header out, I did cut the flange btwn 5 and 7. On the firewall side of the #7 pipe, outside, between the pipe and flange is a nice-sized pinhole and a stream of black ext spray clearly visible. PRICELESS! The bead where it should seal against the head / gasket is not very pronounced.....will see what TC guy PROPEST John's welder bud has to say. Waiting for his call. Failing that call soon, off to WALT's.

I had leaking headers too. I smeared some super high heat rtv and it seems to be holding up. Darn cheap headers... The copper header gaskets seem to be working ok now if you can get them to line up perfect.

Right after that, local gearhead Scott called, met him for a late lunch. I treated so he took the header home with him to weld. The 'rings' around the ports are fine. On the inside edge of the ring, firewall side of #7 there was a lot more than a pin-hole as reported. Under bright light I saw two splits, roughly 1/2" cracked/split if you totaled the two split sizes. Small wonder the noise was so profound and nothing could seal.
Also discussed the front springs and getting some shorter back springs....

Slowly but surely, working down my list....
when I get the back coils (decided new vs my used or anyone else's used units and possible problems), will do the airbags, LCAs...etc.

I also got a call from George but missed it. Said he wanted me to hear him driving it. Doesnt he know that its illegal to operate a cellular device from the wheel of a motor vehicle? Hopefully he was wearing a headset...

Sorry I missed ya George, hope your layin rubber! You owe us a pic!

OK< Aukai was asking.....

The header crack was welded by Scott. I installed the header SUN evening.
Rather than milk and cookies and to bed at 9pm like old people, I took the Elky out for a little test. Very pleased the repair on the header worked....99% of the exhaust leaks are gone! Severe fog conditions so damp streets. Rrrrrrrrrrrr Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr all over. Nice to actually hear the tailpipe sound rather than THHH THHH THHH of the exhaust leak.

At lunch break, dropped the S-10 at the house. While the little doggie was outside watering something, I loaded up stuff to return to Dennis down the street. Shortly afterward, Dennis got to hear the Elky w/o exhaust leaks. He loved it. Got an "AttaBoy" from a Senior Gearhead.

Scott cut the front coils from Ben and I got another set of custom coils from Jeff at work today for the back.....should have the stance sorted-out soon.

Looking at my interior stuff being installed.
Probably more important to get all the suspension stuff onto the Elky....those TAs don't stand a chance as things are now....
