: Question for Wolfplace / Others Please
Gazzer Jan 23rd, 05, 12:58 PM Hi Mike, others,
I am going to check and adjust my valve lash today. It's a 454, Isky rr-620 solid roller.
The CAM spec sheet says Intake and Exhaust to be set @ .030 hot & .032 cold.
I have Edelbrock Aluminum heads and it makes sense to me that these numbers would change slightly but my question is how much ?
Thank You,
Gaz

The best way is to adjust them hot. That way all expansion etc is taken into account. Anything else is just a guess. You could do them hot the first time, then let the engine cool off and see what you have. Then maybe use that adjustment to do them cold ?
Just my opinion,
Gazzer Jan 23rd, 05, 2:39 PM Bill, Thanks, good point. The only problem is I have the valve covers, fan, shroud, belts off, plugs out and it's cold. So, for this time I will be setting them in there cold state.

Wolfplace Jan 23rd, 05, 2:48 PM .004-005 tight with aluminum will be extremely accurate,
I use it all the time on with aluminum heads & it ain't failed me yet :D
You may find you need .005-.006 with a Rat but I use .004 on both BB & SB.
I always go back & recheck hot but it is pretty rare I need to deviate from this.
The book says .002 loose cold for iron but I use the spec number & it seems to work for me
Gazzer Jan 23rd, 05, 7:43 PM Mike, Thanks for your help as always, it's very much appreciated :D I just finished checking and setting all my valves using te EOIC method.
I lashed em .004 tight as you suggested at .028
Five valves were right at .028, One was at .027,Eight were at .030, One was at .032 and One intake was loose at .041
Obvoiusly, the loose one at .041 was my noisy one, but what other symptoms would an intake valve loose by .013 have ? Could this have caused some of my hard starts with a few back fires ?
I started it up when complete and it fired right up and sounded real good.

I am assuming you meant .026 intake & .028 exhaust ;)
mr68 Jan 23rd, 05, 8:13 PM mike , i agree with you on the tight setting for alum heads. i set mine cold at .021/.o22 and always wind up at .026 /.027 hot. ray

I am assuming you meant .026 intake & .028 exhaust ;) Actually, No, the Isky spec sheet calls for the same lash on both intake and exhaust, .030 hot and .032 cold. So, since you suggested .004 tight, I set em all at .028
Do you think I should have done different ?
