: Mechanical Fuel Pump?

I currently have a Holley blue pump that was on the car when I bought it. It seems to be working fine.
My car has a healthy 468 with 781's with 2.19/1.88 valves and a comp 630/630 solid lift cam. I use the car primarily as a weekend cruiser with drag stip plans in the very near future. I wanted to know which mechanical fuel pump would be recommended and how difficult it would be to install? I'm going to use the holley blue for a dedicated nitrous fuel setup to include a small fuel cell.

Thanks

I use an Edelbrock Victor mech pump - 1/2" in/out and a big 6 valve body. With a 1/2" line from the tank it pumps plenty to feed my big block and a 125 shot of N2O.

I use the Carter 172 mechanical pump 3 years now..from a 11.40 ET in my Monte now the same pump bolted into my 540 running 10.80's. I happen to be selling a used one, but I have some info on the pump posted in my ad.

Thanks Bob and MC for the info. Does either of your fuel pumps require a return line? Also how difficult are they to install?
MC I would like to check out your ad but I don't have access or a password to enter. How do I get access anyway?
FYI...I'm currently set up with a 150 shot but it's a two stage system that I'll eventually set up fo 100 on each stage.

I have a question on mech pumps.
All the ones Ive seen have whats called a "weep hole" that acts as a vent for the diaphragm,& it also acts as "tattle-tale" of sorts,as fuel will most likely leak out of this hole if the diaphrahm ruptures. On some marine applications, the Coast Guard requires a hose going from the weep hole to the air cleaner/spark arrester. If the diaphragm ruptures,& leaks fuel,it will fatten up the engine(obviousley)forcing the owner/operator to track down the problem. I was just wondering if any of you Drag Racers have considered running a line from the vent/weep hole from the pump, up to the air cleaner/velocity stack.

With my kind of luck,Fuel would spray out of the weep hole,& hit the headers. graemlins/clonk.gif

Carter does not require a return line or a regulator.

Interesting about the weep hole and gas on header, I will check it out.

OK Texas70 since you are from the Houston area I guess I'll let you have this one. :D

I'll price a new one. By the way is the reason no one is telling me how to install it because it's that simple or ?? :(

The reason i posted the question is because i just built a SB for my friends fishing boat.
The pump has a 1/8" brass pipe nipple fitting in the weep hole & i ran 1/4" fuel hose up to the carb/air filter.
I guess on a race car,you could plumb a line away from the pipes.(I can tell ive had too much java this mornin!)

Thanks 2k3Chevelle468, I knew I'd get it if I threw a fit graemlins/waving.gif

Where would I get a new one if I don't win this one ?

I assume it installs just as any stock mechanical pump would, but I'm not sure......

How do you install a stock mechanical fuel pump? My motor currently has a block off plate. Is it just a matter of removing the block off and inserting the pump?

Texas70 - I'm going to check Jegs or Summit Racing.

They are $95 or so from Summit or Jegs.

To install you will need a fuel pump pushrod, if you have a roller cam it will likely need a brass tipped pushrod, if not a standard GM will do. Remove your cover plate, load up the pushrod with some multi-purpose grease to hold it in place and then install pump. you will have to compress the pump arm slightly, just make sure the pump pushrod stays in there.

I sold 2 new ones on here about 2 months ago. I have other 120 gph BB Carters as well.

Tom, I have a Holley 110 GPH fuel pump. Is the Carter much better than this?? With a blown BB, I think I am going to need all the fuel I can get, or even a well prepped 468. I am just wondering if mine will work well? Thanks.

Honestly though, no reason for us to give all our money to Tom ;) . I'll walk from this one, just say the word......

heck at this rate of bidding, I'll take the one off my car and sell that too...

Gene, where have you been  I have had 6 of these posted on TC over the last year.... including a new in the box one. ;)

Jeremy, I have not run a comparison test against the Holley you mentioned, but I can say that the Carter 172 pump works Very Well. For the cost and peace of mind, If I were you I would switch to the Carter 172. Sell the Holley on Ebay, you'll get $30+ for it.

If it comes down to it, what if we talk to some suppliers about a package deal on some new ones?
Who's interested ?

Headerfire; The only thing I've ever seen come out of the weep hole due to a ruptured diaphram was OIL!!!!! Lots of it out of my new fuel pump all over my new ceramic headers. It happened at high rpms. At low rpms it just put out a light drip.

I purchased a Carter 172 from Tom but haven't fired it up yet. I did find another source besides Summit or Jegs since then. Price looks reasonable. Maybe get you a bit on shipping.

Here's a link to the one I have...

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D1712

It works well and is larger than the Carter but is only rated at 130gph. I don't know how Carter gets 172gph from that little pump, it's pretty amazing.
The BG mechanical pump is similar to the Edelbrock and is also a good pump. I think any of the above pumps will do. The Edelbrock and BG pumps do require a regulator - not sure about the Carter. I would recommend buying a Moroso or ARP lightweight fuel pump pushrod.

Let me just add that during a recent dyno session, one of these Carter 172 fuel pumps ALONE fed my 1050 Dominator equipped 540 and NEVER dropped below 6 psi thru 6500 rpms!
Supported a peak of 696 HP @ 6100 rpm.
This pump had also been purchased from Tom. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
No regulator needed.

John, no problem, I'd probably have to add frekin' New York sales tax to it through a registered transaction! I don't really need one, just would like a good spare mech pump around. Given how my ol street car pulls at the top end, I'm not sure anything needs done. ?maybe But that AC pump is on its second motor right now. 20,000+ miles getting revved up high.

I should've been paying mind to the TC ads Tom. Sure like to get a barely used CHEAP one for a spare!( wink , wink, nudge, nudge ;) )

woulda coulda shoulda....

Just a "heads up" - here's the Carter 172 gph pump for a SB at $55. Shipping is $6.50. I found him on eBay.

Carter part# M60969 (http://www.auctionworks.com/store/itemDetail.asp?sid=200401071123370000000042153087&sfid=26586&id=10824394#desc)

Bob, I think the rated flow difference your seeing is "Free flow" vs. "flow at rated pressure". I'm in the market for a new pump and have been researching alot of the different manufactures info on pumps, some rate at free flow (0 pressure) while others rate at pressure (6-8 psi). I think either the Holley or Barry Grant website gives you an actual graph of the pumps flow vs. pressure, would be much easier to compare if all manufactures had the same info!

Befair, thanks for the heads up on the Carter SB 172 on Ebay. I just ordered it, the new pump is costing me $62 bucks shipped to the door, with AN fittings!! Saving me about 20 bucks from the summit price.

I have been watching this and similar threads on TC with great interest. I have run into fuel delivery issues on the top end and am upgrading me entire fuel system. Consequently, I now have a Carter Street Pump (120 GPH) M4891 available if anyone is interested?

Thanks
