: Thinking about building a 540 on spray

Hey guys, I just barely got the 383 swap done in the Chevelle and i'm already thinking about whats next. The answer to that is get the car in the 9's and still have it so it can be driven anywhere any time, even on the freeway for decent distances (few hour drives.) How you ask? How about a roller 540 and a bunch of nitrous? So I figure the first step in this would be to figure out how I plan on meeting my goals and the slowly start collecting parts. Is this goal even attainable? I don't want something that is going to need the valve train redone every week. Anyone have any suggestions or comments?

Thanks

Sounds like a good plan! I too am interested, as I also plan on building a "narly" motor with a reliable valvetrain. I will definately keep my eye on this post. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Tom,
I'm about 2.5 steps ahead of you. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
The 383 is coming out of my '70 this weekend to make room for it's 540 big brother. tongue.gif
Seems like it's taken me all summer to accumulate all the pieces to this monster.
Actually, I had started from the back of the car and moved forward, replacing the complete drivetrain and suspension. The car is scheduled for paint this winter...
Good luck!

Thanks Just run a solid flat tappet cam and keep the rpm range down - it will be a very streetable torque monster and love the nitrous. Running a max effort solid roller on the freeway for 3 hrs straight might not be very dependable, although I'm sure others have done it!

Tom's Camino do your self a favor and install that cam straight up, I can not imagine any reason to run that thing advanced 5 degrees.

Seems liek the 540 build that BillsCamino listed would be a solid 9 second street ride, without the spray. Anyone agree? I was thinking of the same shortblock for my 310cc Canfield heads, to make a 9 second pump gas motor Wadda you guys think?

Seeme like the 540 build-up that BillsCamino listed would do the trick, without the spray. Anyone else agree? I was thinking of a nearly identical shortblock for my ported 310cc Canfields, to make a pump gas 9 second ride. Any thoughts?

I have a skewed view of what it takes to run nines with a street car because our air is typically 5000+ feet and our track sucks!

It should run 9's easy once he gets it to hook.
