Mike Parker is a HVAC tech.
Dave Oct 25th, 08, 1:28 AM What's it doing anyhow? Can You see a flashing red light in the peekhole?
Kevin R Oct 25th, 08, 1:30 AM What's it doing anyhow? Can You see a flashing red light in the peekhole?
Yep 4 flashes which is an high open limit.. It runs good for about a day then it just stops lighting and the blower just blows cold air.. So I shut it down for about an hour then it works again

Thank you very much Dave:yes:
Dave Oct 25th, 08, 3:28 AM You are welcome very much, Kevin.
66SSFan Oct 25th, 08, 11:05 AM You need a new High limit switch. What brand is it?
Dave is right on here:thumbsup:
It is about the size of a credit card and is located just above the burner box. There are two red wires that plug onto the two terminals. It is easier to use a 1/4" nut driver to get the two screws out that hold it in, when putting the new one in make sure the little felt gasket is on there. I didn't tell you this but, if you take the two wires off and wire tie or jump them together the furance will run if it's the real problem. Your just by-passing the saftey limit and this will give you heat untill you get the part. Once you take the old one out use a flash light and look inside for small cracks on the heat exchangers, you can also put your finger inside and feel around the dimples on them for cracks. If there are any replace them.
FWI for anyone useing a furnace, gas or electric PLEASE READ:
A hight temp limit is auto resetting untill it fails completely. It is simply a bi-metal strip that bends/snaps away from the conact point at a given temp and turns off the gas valve. The main control board reads this as your furnace is too hot and runs the fan to cool it self down. Once the switch is cool the metal strip contracts and snaps closed returning the 24 volt control power to the system. If your air filter is plugged or too many supply registers are closed or blocked off it reduces the air flow across the furnace heat exchangers or electrical heat strips and causes the unit to over heat. The furnace can shut itself on and off many times for months on the high temp limit and you may not notice untill it brakes. Air flow through the heating/cooling equipment is the most important thing to maintain in the system, keep the vents clear and change the air filter every 3-4 months!
FRYNTYR Oct 25th, 08, 11:14 AM We had issues with our furnace after finishing it. The furnace repair people tried to repair it several times and finally replaced it entirely under warranty. The symtoms kept pointing towards a limit switch. Haven't had an issue since.
Kevin R Oct 25th, 08, 11:27 AM Thanks Mike, I went down and looked and found the limit switch but now where do I purchase one??
Dave Oct 26th, 08, 1:14 AM I'll find out from Tom tommorrow. I think Trane is onna them who only sells through an authorized dealer.
66SSFan Oct 26th, 08, 4:33 AM I'll find out from Tom tommorrow. I think Trane is onna them who only sells through an authorized dealer.
This is true, there should be a pt# on the limit switch along with the temp range it operates in. If Dave cannot hook you up with the part, PM me and I will give you my license info to purchase it at Trane parts in Bellevue.
Kevin R Oct 26th, 08, 8:02 AM I took the two wires off of what I think is the limit switch and jumped them together and it did not work..I might need to post a pic of the furnace to see if Im checking the correct part...
gotago Oct 26th, 08, 10:01 AM I think you're gonna need a lot more than one fire extinguisher for this one, better roll a fire truck or two while you repair the furnace:D(jk)
66SSFan Oct 26th, 08, 12:46 PM I have to go to work in a few min, if you need any help call me. hopefully you turned power off to the furnace before working on it. If not, you could have blown the 3 amp fuse on the control board? If this is so, the lights on the board would not be blinking anymore. If you jumped them together and it is acting the same, plug them back in to the limit and remove the blower section door. Look for two more wires on the blower housing that go to another high temp limit, this one should be a manuel re-set. It's only about the size of a quarter and should have a very small red plastic button on it. Just push the button to re-set it. Not all furnaces have one of these in the blower section though.
Kevin R Oct 26th, 08, 1:34 PM Light on the board still blinking 4 flashes for high open limit switch... No reset button
66SSFan Oct 26th, 08, 2:13 PM The only other limits are refered to as "Roll out switch" On a Trane it could be a small resistor just above the burner box or two manuel reset switches on each side of the burner box. What happens if you turn off the main power at the breaker and turn it back on.
All the saftey controls in the furnace are wired together. If you follow the wires from the hight temp limit switch you will find all saftey wired into the unit. It uses 24volts and is jumped from one saftey to the next. If you have a multi meter or volt meter, trun on the funace and check for 24 volts at each side of each saftey. You can also turn the meter to ohms and check for continuity through the switch with the power off and the switch dis-connected. Call me at home if you need some help, I'll be in the shop. If we cannot get this figuered out today I can send a friend of mine up to your place from Woodinville to check it out.
Kevin R Oct 26th, 08, 2:30 PM Thanks Mike,, To tell you the truth Im lost with this thing. Im afraid to mess with it anymore thinking Im going to mess it up. If your buddy can take a look at it that would be great....
66SSFan Oct 26th, 08, 4:06 PM Kevin, looks like I will driving up to Mill Creek this afternoon to drop off my engine block. I'll call you and get directions to your place if you will be home this evening I can check it out.
Kevin R Oct 26th, 08, 8:18 PM Sweet Mike and Brian are coming over in a few so Mike can do a diagnostic on my furnace:thumbsup:
66 Buick Special Oct 26th, 08, 8:47 PM That Rocks Kevin!
Hopefully it's a cheap and easy fix!
Dave Oct 26th, 08, 10:28 PM Cool, shouldn't be too much to fix it up.
Kevin R Oct 26th, 08, 10:56 PM Ok I will tell you what happened before Mike and Brian get home, Mike came by and what do you know the furnace starts right up and runs.He just took the covers off and taped the switch so it would run with the covers off. He explains how it all works and reasons for a high limit code. We let it run for awhile and heat up and it does just fine with out a problem. So Mike goes to put the two covers back on the way I had them on and noticed that the top cover isnt fitting right and then realized that I had the two covers on upside down. The bottom cover is supposed to have to louvers in it so that fresh air can be pulled in for the burner but I had the damn thing on the top covering the control panel.:clonk::clonk: Mike found the reason why the furnace would not run and over heat.. Man I felt stupid and all Brian could do was stand there and laugh:yes: Mike thanks for coming over and getting everything working again:thumbsup: I wish you guys would have stayed and ate the pizza I got for ya but I understand your along way from home. Maybe next time:yes:
Dave Oct 26th, 08, 11:27 PM Doesn't matter what You touch, Huh.:D

kettbo Oct 27th, 08, 12:32 AM Better to have the 66SSFan get a laugh outa ya then some dummass ya don't know charging you a few hundred and maybe not getting it right.

Kevin R Oct 27th, 08, 12:59 AM Ok update. Furnace is acting up again:sad: I called Mike he walked me through and jumped the limit switches and its still not working. Only other thing Mike thinks it could be is the board. He is going to call Trane parts in Bellevue and have it at will call for me tomorrow. I will let you know what happens.
OutCast Oct 27th, 08, 1:01 AM Time to get out the woolies, Kevin.
66 Buick Special Oct 27th, 08, 1:18 AM I liked the story better when it was just upside down doors causing the issue.:(

X2:D
I wish that was the problem for yah Kevin, hopefully the new board isnt too spendy. You might have to sell some of those secret new parts to offset the cost though:thumbsup:

What secret parts? I cant keep a secret you know that:yes:
Kevin R Oct 28th, 08, 8:22 PM Ok well Mike hooked me up with a new circuit board today and it was only 80 bucks so not too bad.. Well I installed it and so far so good. Im going to be keeping a close eye on it.. Thanks for all your help with this Mike:thumbsup:
Dave Oct 28th, 08, 10:08 PM Cool, You don't want to test the over limit switch, result's can be BADDD.
66SSFan Oct 29th, 08, 12:02 AM Glad to hear it Kevin, once we had by-passed all the limits for a short time and the board is still failing on a high temp limit, the only choice left is the board it self. All wire connections where good so I'm happy the new board did the trick:D
Kevin R Oct 30th, 08, 12:19 AM Still working:thumbsup:
Dave Oct 30th, 08, 12:33 AM Cool.
66SSFan Oct 30th, 08, 8:11 AM Cool.
Warm:D
