Hi all:

I recently purchased a 70 Chevelle SS with a repop dash. It has the U14 gauges but only the fuel gauge works. There are autometer gauges for water temp, oil pressure, and voltage under the dash. I don't know where to start on hooking up the factory gauges though. Any advise is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

First name everything in on the dash that does work correctly, TS, high beam indicator, ect...
Your problems will depend on what harnesses was replaced, if any, or if the original harness was converted. Its possible someone just bolted the repop dash gauges in and didn't bother to wire anything else.

Thanks, Greg. Here is a list of what works. Also, the car was originally a U14 car if that makes any difference.

Clock
Tach
High Beam Indicator
Fuel Gauge
Both Turn Signals
Emergency Brake Light
Speedometer
All gauges are backlit at night as well

Thanks, Stephen

Assuming the printed circuit is correct, do I even need to pull the dash apart? Isn't the connection I need to make external to the firewall?

First, look for the DK green wire going to the sending unit. Disconnect that wire, with key on ground it to the block, the temp gauge should peg to full hot. Does this happen?

The car should have a amp meter not a voltmeter. Should look like this.....

At the junction block on the rad support by the battery, on factory gauge cars, there should be 3 wires, one is a 20g orange that turns into a 16g black. Is this wire there?

Sorry for the delay...I had to get time to take some pics. The water temp sending unit is in the back driver-side of the intake. I know for a fact that this sending unit is directly connected to the autometer gauge under the dash. I guess what I'd really like to know is which one of the wires in my pics goes should be running to the sending unit so that the dash gauge works. I apologize for my ignorance...maybe I am not even looking at the right wires. Thanks! Also, does the loose plug under the dash have anything to do with my problem?http://www.geocities.com/powrdbyford/wires1

You probably can't use the autometer sending unit for the factory gauge. You need to use a OEM sending unit. The 20g DG comes out of firewall bulkhead.

Also, does the loose plug under the dash have anything to do with my problem?

The loose plug is the A/C feed wire. The brown is from the fuse box (power with key on) the black w/purple stripe is out to TCS, the top right hand fuse feed it. (A/C TCS SOL 25A fuse) If you car doesn't have A/C, it was left unconnected from the factory.

No. All gauge connections come through the firewall bulkhead except fot the tach.

the factory temp gauge wire will be a dark green wire with a plug that has a notch on the one side to slip over the "nipple" on a factory type sender. it should be laying in the engine compartment somewhere near the factory sending unit location in the driver's side cylinder head between the two front spark plugs.
there should be a sender there that looks like this:

So, I need to be looking for a group of wires coming out of the bulkhead to find my green wire then, correct? I think the main problem is I don't even know where I am supposed to look. I will look in the driver's side head for the factory sending unit and/or a green wired anywhere around there. Thanks!
