Harold, how does this Lunati cam (232/239 @ .050 .549/.558 110 LSA) compare to the old Ultradyne 231/239 .550/.575 110 LSA? What is the minimum rec. compression for this cam? Thanks in advance.

Let me say this------
My original cam, the one designed for Mercury Marine, had the following specs:

288/296 at .0045"/.006"
231/239 at .050"
.550"/.558" valve lift, 1.7:1 rockers
110 LSA.

After several years, I changed the exhaust to the 296 at .0045, 239 at .050, .575" valve lift.

What do you think?

Harold, looks to be the same to me then..
I'm calculating that it would be reasonably happy with 9.0 to 1 compression via flat tops and #215 closed chambered heads..your opinion?

Mercury Marine ran it with 8.8:1 CR (all their 'production' engines have to use 87-octane regular gas.) and Rectangle port heads, 850 DP, Wieand Team G, and Gill exhaust manifolds--very much like shorty headers.
They told me on their dyno, 1982--This combo would make between 450 and 475 HP, average around 465 at 5800. Their old piece made between 400 and 440 hp, and was rated as 440-- The 440 Magnum. Their old cam had 3 more degrees on the intake and 5 more on exhaust, with aprox .550 and .580 valve lift, 114 LSA. It would not reliably deliver 440 BHP.......
All dyno numbers vary so widely you can only get close on the same dyno, and closest on the same day.....

BTW,

My old UD 296/306H14, 296/306 at .006(the 296H is the old original 288/296H exhaust...), 239/249 at .050, .558/.580 valve lift, and 114 LSA, picked up the Mercury Marine 465HP---502 with EFI---50 BHP with just a cam change.
This cam was the star of a 3-part article in Hot Boat magazzine several years age. They took a 465HP 502 with EFI, dynoed it---458 BHP. Then they did a little work, extrude-honing, Crower 1.8s, etc, etc, etc---485 BHP with stock cam. Then they got a UD BB296/306H14 and a set of HL1817 for only a buck or two over $200(This WAS a long time ago...), and 535 BHP at 5800, again on regular 87-octane.... The BHP and torque increase at ALL RPMs vrs the stock cam. They did no running under 3000.....
Lunati sells that cam as part number 203A9LUN----OOPs---I put H15 on the intake, instead of H1-- It is 296/306, 239/249, .575"/.580", and still 114 LSA.

I'd just like to add that I used this lunati cam in my 454 & am happy with the performance. Street manners are fine too it's got tons of bottom end, (maybey all 454s do).

UD Harold, I had to put this cam in at 108 due to piston/valve clearance. Do you recommend advancing it like your UD grinds?
