Hi guys. I have a few quesitons regarding heads. Whats the difference between Oval and Rectangular ports (i tried looking it up, but could not find anything on it). I have IDed my heads and they are 1974-1987 454 113cc heads. They are peanut port oval. How is an oval a peanut? I am a little lost when it comes to heads.

These heads aren't the greatest for performance right? My car seems to pull very nicely with them. If I changed to a new oval or rectangular port head, would I see a performance gain? What about an intake swap. I have never seen a intake for peanut ports. Could someone please explain this to me. I know this is a lot of questions, but any help is greatley appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

There are 3 types of BBC heads: rectangular (or sqaure port) oval port and oval port peanut heads. The peanut heads have small runners 200-225 cc,large oval are 250-260 cc and squareports have 290 cc and up.If you have peanut port heads, you will get a peformance/hp increase for sure switching to large ovals,as well as pick up some compression if going from open chambers to closed chambers.

If the port is wider then it is tall, it is a peanut port and it is called that b/c somebody thought they were really small, like a "Peanut" years ago..

If it an oval shape and is taller then it is wide, it is a large oval..

And if it is great big rect. shaped with rounded corners, it's the big rect. port heads..
