The best way I have found to get your rear end width correct is to place your wheels and tires under the car and set the body at ride height. Then measure between the wheel mounting surfaces to get your width as there are so many different rim backspacings. It is a personal preference but nothing looks worse than a narrowed and tubbed car with a rear end that is 5 or 6 inches too narrow. If you set your wheels and tires under the car first, you can put them exactly where you want them and fill up the wheel well. Also on a street car you would need to set your frame rails as wide as possible{assuming your clip is not welded up already} so your car will drive better and navigate corners. The farther out your shocks are, the better your car will handle on the street. Hope this helps.

Hi, yes it does help. the only problem is The frame is already jig weldedat 24" wide frame rails,I thought it was 22 but i was wrong. it will see little street use, due to my engine (blown 383) and the other problem is the frame is not under the car.I also have a 68 chevelle that i was going to measure from for hight and pinion angle. but i like your idea of sitting the tires under the body and measure to the inside of the rims!!! I already have the rims there 18.5 bye 14 and I want the room to put under 21.5 inch tires. Thanks

18.5x14 rims? Is that a misprint? WHen I see some one type rim I assume they mean just the wheel with no tire. Am I misreading your comment? Also do you still need a measurement? I have 2 back-halfed cars I can measure if you need it. It might take a couple days due to my work schedule. Post if you need them.

Hi, the tires and rims i have now are 31x18.5x15 on 14x15"rims with a 3 1/2 back space I think if i narrow my 9" to fit this combination itll be perfect for a set of 16x16" rims with a 21.5 tire for the street? My frame rails are 24" apart so there will be plenty of room for big tires on the inside.what size tire is under your car? Thanks

My orange pig is setup with 33x19.50x15s but came with 33x16.0x15 slicks. Both are mounted on 15x15s with 4.5in back space. The slicks measurement is just slightly less than the Sportsman 33x21.50x15:
Tire Diameter (in): 32.00 in.
Section Width (in): 20.20 in.
Tread Width (in): 16.80 in.

My Goodyear Slicks:
Tire Diameter (in): 32.80 in.
Section Width (in): 19.90 in.
Tread Width (in): 16.30 in.

The car also is running disc brakes so that may factor in slightly too.

The 68 will fit the same tires too.

Can you find 16 inch rim size big tires easily? Most I see are for 15 inch rims. Mickey Thompson and Hoosier are about the only ones who make a big tire in the size you are wanting and neither use a 16 inch for those sizes that I could find. If you go to 18s I think they do but the rims will be $$$$$$.

I was looking at the rim size 15-18, me bad your right. o.k then i need convo pro 15x15 should work. I also already have a set of lincoln versatyle disk brake setup for the rear.I was thinking of selling that and put in a more lighter disk brake setup?I drive the car on the street to but i want the big tires for the street and car shows. the 15x14 inch convos that i have now are going to have slicks mounted on them for the race track!!ThankYou for taking the time to measure and help me out!!!! Your cars must look mean, whaat do they run, and what motor ,trany gear are you running???

Did you finish the rear end yet? I have a '65 Pro-street that had the Lincoln discs, and they were just OK. I rebuilt the whole rear axle last winter and put Wilwood brakes on. If the axle is out of the car, they mount really easy, since you have to take the calipers on and off several times, until you have them shimmed correctly. I used the kit without the emergency brake, and saved a few dollars and a lot of time and cuss words trying to make an E brake work. I'm installing front Wilwoods on the car right now so that I have a matching system. Good luck!

hi, no its not done yet but i did put the tires under the body and got a measurement i have the axle housing specially built with custum 4-link brackets better built than what came with my frame kit. my narrowed 9" now has a back brace, new ends and new 4 link brackets and built in wheelie mounts off the 4 link brackets.just need to come up with the money to get axles now..lol got all my new frame washers in, had to cut out all the rust where the body mounts where and install new washers..i think im going to put the body back on to tubb it when i get my new axles..
