Heres a timeslip from Englishtown 2/28/04
58*
Humidity 35
Barometer 30.49

2.06 60 ft.
5.596 330
8.502/83.69 1/8
11.039 1000
13.20/103.4 MPH 1/4

running 235/60 drag radials 18 lbs.

Heres a timeslip from yesterday,at Lebanon Valley 4/17
If I had to guess,it was 65* out (LVD doesn't have weather conds on timeslip)
This track is 600 ft. above sea level compared to Etown is I believe 60 ft. above, but I could be wrong.

1.95 60ft.
5.54 330
8.55/81.95 1/8
11.142 1000
13.33/102.45 MPH 1/4

No changes other then a switch to 26x9.5x15" Hoosier QT DOT Pro's 20 lbs.
..and a different track of course with different condtions and weather..now you would think by getting the same 60 ft. I did yesterday, but duplicated it under the same condtions I had on 2/28,I could have possibly run a 13.05 with a 1.95 60 ft. or maybe a hair better.
Anyway,so no new bests,but here's a launch picture

Gee Chris, I don't know. Your 60' and 330' were both better yesterday, but you lost out on the 660' time along with MPH. Did you have a tailwind at E-town back in Feb or a headwind yesterday??

mr 4 speed
Apr 18th, 04, 8:12 AM
Jim,don't really recall the wind situation..
But,I did run the factory cowl aircleaner at Etown, and yesterday at LVD,I had the same 3" element, but with a factory dropbase open aircleaner instead of the cowl aircleaner..wonder if that was the 1 MPH difference?
This is it here: http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/454.jpg

I put the factory cowl induction air cleaner back on last night, guess I'll leave it on..wish I brought it with me too :(

I just looked at the pic,....maybe it is that kink in you fuel line :D
Single throttle return spring?? They let you get away with that?
Seriously though, I can't imagine that air cleaner setup causing a 1.5MPH drop in the 1/8th. Could be altitude/weather differences. How many runs did you get in? What do the other slips show?

I would have to say it is the small exhaust :D . Just kidding. Nice pic.

Great pic Chris. graemlins/thumbsup.gif Hey look at it this way.At least you got to GO to the track with yours
Mines in paint jail, all I have is the videos from Etown
How many runs did you make? Did you keep your tire psi the same all day at 20?

Tree'd by an Import Chris? ;) Still yet,a bad day racing is better than just about anything else. I notice your e.t. is kinda weak on the top compared to mine, between the 1000ft and 1/4 mile I'm doing it in 1.9 seconds, and you're at 2.2 seconds,I wouldnt think gears would play that big of a part on the top end, then again maybe they would. What cam and carb are you running? Heres some of mine from tnt friday night:

.528---.665---.596---.509---.478
1.76---1.75---1.75---1.75---2.10
5.06---5.05---5.04---5.02---5.52
7.83---7.81---7.80---7.77---8.30
89.16--89.33--89.23--89.28--88.98
10.22--10.20--10.20--10.15--10.69
101.71-101.58-101.44-102.08-101.39
12.13--12.11--12.11--12.05--12.60
110.21-110.21-110.07-110.67-110.18

That last pass they had water halfway to the starting line, needless to say I spun. This was on drag radials, they won't let us run 1/4 mile on slicks at this track...60ft. improves slightly with slicks 1.71-1.73 right now,the DR are still new and get better with a little wear on them.

Chris the Barometer and DA effect your ET's more then the temp.

Guys,got 3 runs in..the other two where a 13.46 and a 13.7
Jim,I run 2 return springs at the track, but only 1 on the street..gas pedal is too stiff, and since I have a vacuum carb, the return(s) only have to work the primaries..I know you where just ribbin' :D
Bob,I have the UD 280/288 cam 223/231 @ .050 .525/.550 112 LSA and a regular old Peformer intake with a 3310 Holley..small tube headers and a full 2.5" exhaust.
Steve,thanks for the compliment smile.gif

I am sure you thought this out, but you went from a 25.10" dia tire to a 26", effectively reducing your rear ratio to 2.65 or so. I will bet you have a 1/2 second in there just by changing the gear near 3:23.

Well, I went to my local track today in hopes of getting better times than you but fell short!!!

My three best runs, 1/8 mile only track;

8.62 @ 79.1 with 1.93 60ft
8.59 @ 79.8 with 1.98 60ft
8.59 @ 81.6 with 1.92 60ft.

The engine ran great but still have problems launching. Even though it's hooking slightly better and more consistant I was disappointed that the air bags and KYB shocks didn't improve my 60 ft times. In fact I now have a wheel hop issue I've never had before. I can feather it off the line and not get the hop but still can't stand on it hard like I want to.

My previous best time at the same track was a 8.57 with a 1.88 60ft. The thing is that was in the fall of the year at night with a 50* temp. Runs today were midday with 80* temps. I don't know how the humidity and pressure were for comparison though.

Joe,the drag radials and Hoosiers are the same height..and yes, that is a 'stang smile.gif

Never compared them side by side, just comparing calculated numbers. Sometimes we overlook the simplest things. Oh and by the way, not to hijack your thread, but in the event you revisit this, just thought I should share my brainfart - no bent valves in my engine - plenty of p/v clearance - in the end, I tore this poor motor down again, put it on the stand and started going over everything again, the conclusion, intake push rods were too short causing the rocker to bind on the stud in the valve closed position. When setting the valves in fact, somehow the rockers would bottum out right at "0" lash so that when I put the additional 1/2 turn on the hydraulics it would push the valves off the seat instead of the plunger down into the lifter. Not enough to notice when setting the valves but apparently enough to cause plenty of reversion to cause all the coughing and backfiring. You were right when you said, watch it turn out to be something really stupid - this is about as stupid as it gets.

Chris C, The air would definately have made that much difference in your E.T. If you had the monster air you had at E-Town and the traction at the second outing it would probably have been a 13.05-.09 with all else being equal. By the way a Turbo 350 is about .11 quicker and 1 MPH faster than a Turbo 400 and will live if properly built. We have one in my son's 9.6 second, 138.5 MPH '70 Chevelle.(somewhere around 800 H.P.) Will withstand beating if burnouts are done properly.

Chris,

30.49 is a STELLAR barometer. Barometric pressure has the single biggest affect on my cars performance with dew point being the second. I've ran my car before when my weather station was showing altitude changes of over 1,500' and ET wasn't affected by more than .01. BP and dew point were relatively unchanged.

Ken,thanks for the info graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Wish I had my Hoosiers at Etown!

Harold Sutton
Apr 20th, 04, 4:57 PM
Kjett is right the barometric pressure has alot to do with your ability to run great times. 30.49 is a monster barometric pressure reading. The only one i've seen that high was one cool morning on Galveston Island when i was working there and took a reading that was showing -1481 ft. Density Altitude. The strip in Baytown,Tx. has very good air in the Spring and Fall-Winter months.

Humidity is what always slows mine down. it's hard to find a day here in Indiana that the humidity is less than 85-90%. i'll have to pay more attention to the BP from now on though. is that directly related to humidity? i'm not up on meteorology very much.

Chris, have I missed something? I thought we (as in you ;) ) were gunning for a 12.89 or so?

I remember that you cleared up a timing curve issue a while back. Did that dial in some more low end torque that you've not been able handle?

Just wondering if I missed something as it looks like you've slowed down.

For the love of Pete, quit being stubborn. GEAR THAT THING!!!

Ok, just kiddin'. :D graemlins/beers.gif

I've been to the dragstrip at Paragould, Arkansas way back in the '60s. It used to be completely concrete and some oddball length like 1120 ft. long. My 375 horse 396 Chevelle sure liked the concrete and was about a full second faster than on asfault. It ran 11.6 across 1120 ft. The fastest car there that day was '69 Super Stock Camaro that ran a 9.96. Camaro was from "RHS" in Memphis.

Justin,I didn't realize the ET increase due to the better 60 ft. because of the barometric pressure..learn something new everyday smile.gif
Anyway, sometime over the summer I plan on installing the 3.31's I have, and getting back to the track..for now,I'm just gonna keep driving and enjoying it just the way it is..its a lot of fun too graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Ok,checking on weather.com for Lebanon,I found this data for April 17th @ 11:54AM (I made 2 passes just before this)

Temp was 67*
Humidity 30%
Barometer 30.15

How does this compare to Englishtown:
Temp was 58*
Humidity 35%
Barometer 30.49

Running the numbers,Englishtown had -621 ft. Density Altitude vs. Lebanon which was 365 ft.
So I guess thats what they call "mineshaft air" ?
