: Can't shut hood-too much spring tension?

I've been trying to get my 69 chevelle together. Last year I had my hood springs & hinges powdercoated. When I put the car together, the hood wouldn't shut with the springs on because of too much tension. I thought maybe the heat from the powder coating did something to the spring tension, so I bought new springs from Chevrolet. I just put those on and they are the same. I push down on my hood and it doesn't go down, I can kinda hear the hood crackling from the stress. Anybody ever had this problem or am I just lucky?

thanks

You are Super Lucky!!
Hinges need lube at the several hinge points - If powder has been baked into those areas, you are sunk. Buy a new set and lube them, clean the areas around the hinges and paint them.
Springs should not get powder coat, it will crack as they flex.

I had previously lubed the hinge points with white lithium grease (trying to avoid the dirt) and didn't have any luck. After reading your post, i thought I had nothing to lose and lubed up with penetrating oil. And it shut. A little stiff at the top, but i think it will work out. Thanks for the help.

You said the hood was crackling? You arn't trying to use a fiberglass hood with regular springs are you?
