Is it just me, or is this cam really noisy? at idle, all i hear is a chattering at the valvetrain. I've also been warned to watch my lash, and that I should adjust the rockers some..but I just broke the cam in this past weekend. This is my first experience with an XE cam. I'm running it on a 383 with AFR 195s, and 1.6 full aluminum roller rockers.

I'm running the XE284 with AFR195's and 1.5 aluminum rollers as well in a 406. It is fairly noisy I guess. Mine quieted down quite a bit after I broke it in and readjusted all my valves. Well, except for the one with the leaky lifter. Now that one makes too much noise smile.gif The XE line in generaly is known to make "more" valvetrain noise. I wouldn't call it excessive but you can't open the hood and not hear it.

I got 36 degrees total advance, and the motor was pumpin..sounds great, held its rpms nicely. after idle its not as noticeable...thanks for the info. I think I need adjust my lash...i seem to get alot of noise coming from the #1 cylinder side.

I have been running the xe 284 in my 383 for 4 years now. The cam is quite noisy, but it really moves down the track. I have some polished and ported camel back heads and my elky runs flat 12.0's on motor and 11.50's on a 50hp shot of nitrous. The car crosses the line at 6400 rpms. I also run a 3500 rpm stall converter. Give it some time and you will get used to the noise. I have had no problems with the cam. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Don't think you're supposed to adjust lash on a hyd tappet motor when it's running. Maybe someone can confirm that? But using the IOEC method I'd go with at least 1/2 turn after "0" lash.

I just broke my cam in, and am fighting some overheating issues now. I bought some dual electric fans, and will be installing those this week, therefore i can get it started and seat the rings.

I ran an xe284 in my 454 for 4 years. I was turning times similar to many of my friends with lighter cars and more motor. I always noticed a little noise but nothing extreme. That was until i removed my 990 heads and installed a set of Canfields. Then I noticed more noise on the freeway. Like an idiot I kinda ignored it. Bad move!!! Not enough piston to valve clearance. Busted a valve durring my burnout one day and destroyed the engine. The good news is now I'm building a 468 with a little more compression and an extreme energy xr292r solid roller. I think it will run 11.20s but Im really hoping to touch the 10s with it. The moral of the story: always check piston to valve clearance.
