: dremel died - replacement suggestions?

My dremel died. After 5 or so years of relatively light use (once every couple of months) the speed switch quit working. I went on line and this is a common problem. I got a replacement for $20 put it in and it lasted about 5 minutes. Any ideas on a replacement? I looked at the current ones and they have the same switch and I assume same issues, I don't want to keep buying a problem. I really disappointed in the switch qualityh, crappy plastic with miniature circuit board. What ever happened to metal toggle switchs????

I have a 15-year old bench model that won't die. These aren't cheap, but are built for industry and parts are available. Maybe e-bay?

Does it still work good?
I just tried and call an old friend to see what he used to fix his but it appears he will be gone for the next three years. (6th offence misdemeanor possession of canibis, this time while on probation):clonk:
Anyways, he put some kind of adjustable switch (turn the knob type) in the power cord. I believe he said he got the switch from Radio Shack.:)

Thanks for the replys, No it does not work and all the power goes through the switch which connects to the armature windings with little tiny push pin connectors. I could eye ball it and figure out how to solder on wires to the pins, add my own switch, etc. But not having the tool is keeping be from finishing minor work on my truck cab body I need to get painted before it gets to cold. I can mess with it later this winter, just need a small grinder for some fine sculpting on the dash and door jambs I can't get to with my other grinders.

If you have air, get yourself a die grinder. They are smaller, ligher and cheaper than a Dremel and there is very little to break. Once you use one you'll wonder why you ever bought the Dremel in the first place.

Brushes look new, like I said it wasn't used much. Ebay IS my friend, I'm looking for recommendations other manufactuers besides Dremel. I have a die grinder, but the smallest tools I can find for it are still to big for what I am doing. Maybe I can find one with a 1/8 chuck that will take the dremel tools??? Or an adaptor??

I've got a B & D 2 speed that seems to be working. If you keep your eye open you can find older Dremels at flea markets

I use them all the time in my upholstery work and yes they die fast. I just went out and bought a new one ... kept the box and everytime it quits I put the old one in the new box take it back and exchange it for a new one ! :)

These dremels are kind of like the milwaukee type grinders. I buy two of each, then when using them and they feel like there getting pretty warm to the touch, switch off to the other one.

Still have the four of them and never any problems with them.

orrie,
I have a Makita at the shop. I bet it is probably 15 years old and gets used almost daily. Can't seem to kill it. I have had to replace the power cord a couple of times and the rubber coupler in the front, but they are cheap and easily available. I dont think you can go wrong with it. I use it with a Dremel speed control when using sanding rolls.

I picked up one of those little guys when it was on sale for under $20 - works pretty well and looks nice too even has a case.

I use a Ryobi variable speed most times. Works great and has been very reliable.

Love those little cut-off wheels!!
