: Harold ? Cam for a 555 fuelie please
69 Ratt Vette Jan 27th, 04, 11:19 AM Getting all the parts together for my street / strip BBC.
555 cu. .in 4.560 x 4.25
13.5 to 1
Hogans tunnel ram
2x Holley 1000 cfm throttle bodies
Accel DFI
Pro Action 340 cc fully ported to approx 350 cc intake ports 425-440 cfm at .750
nitrous up to 500 shot
7500 rpms max.
The plan to make this motor live on the street is to run two sets of rocker arms. I would like the lift with 1.8 rockers to be close to .750. I will run that set up for the track. I will then run 1.6 rockers on the street for a total of .660 lift.
I would like for max power to come in around 6900-7300 rpms and then hang in there until 7500. This motor will rely on a lot of nitorus to make its real power, but if possible I would like to make as close to 900 hp NA as possible.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks,
John

The motor is going into a 3450 lbs 4 spd Lenco Vette
UDHarold Jan 27th, 04, 11:41 PM John,
I have to admit that what you're building is one of my personal fantasies, but........
Your combo is made to order for the Lunati 502B4LUN, 313/324 at .020, 282/292 at .050, 197/203 at .200, .768" gross with 1.8s, .683 gross with 1.6s, and 110 LSA. I have a customer who builds 540 SEFI Can-Am engines for Nostalgia racing in Europe---These engines have set track records and won for years---One of the drivers is Chris Childs from England. The engine-builder always calls me up complaining if one of the engines makes under 900 BHP N/A. Most are around 925, and use those 3.0" Crower injector bases and Motec SEFI units.
We can spread that 110 LSA out to 114 LSA if you plan using NO2 a lot, it makes it MUCH easier to control. The 4-speed Lenco would tolerate the 114 very easily. I have people in Long Island, NY, who think the 313/324R10 is a 'real good' street cam in a 540......
The 313/324 as a roller-bearing 350 SBC won the IMSA Manufacturer's Cup for Pontiac 2 years in a row in the mid-80s. They would run up to 180 mile races, 5-speed, 8500......
Let us know when you get that beast running....

69 Ratt Vette Jan 28th, 04, 1:59 AM Thanks Harold,
That is a big cam !! I think the 114 would be fuel injected and nitrous friendly, may even be a little more streetable, idle etc. Would the 282 and 292 @.050 specs make this motor want to make peak power past 6900-7300. If possible I would like to keep the rpms reasonable.
I have a pretty good line on Luntai stuff, Mike Thermos is a friend of mine as am I sure you are aware he is back in the nitrous business. He just opened the doors to Nitrous Supply in Huntington Beach Ca. If it is NOS stuff he probably has it in stock, and if it falls under the Holley Name he can get it for a good deal.
Thanks again for the help
John
69 Ratt Vette Jan 28th, 04, 2:11 AM Forgot to ask, 6 degrees advanced ?
Doug F. Jan 28th, 04, 7:48 AM With the few 540+ engines I have dynoed with cams around that size the peak power will fall in your range. Most were EFI too.
That will be quite a "street" engine. You should be able to make 900 HP with your combo or something is wrong imo.
69 Ratt Vette Jan 28th, 04, 10:12 AM Thanks Doug,
Remember any of the 850+ hp combos similar to mine off top your head ?
John
Doug F. Jan 28th, 04, 12:46 PM Not in any detail. One was a 540 with 310 canfields, ported. The cam was somewhere around 280@.050. Compression was around 13.5:1. Intake was a Holley EFI with 2000 CFM dominator flanged throttle body. Did a couple of engines like that.
Did a 600" Ford with similar specs that was over 930 HP.
I just tuned these and assisted with the EFI installation.
IMO they would only be driven on the street by a very hardcore person. Obviously the compression dicates that in itself. The idle is obviously pretty rough. With the EFI 1100-1200 should be doable, although we set them to 1300-1400 on the dyno.
With the spray I'd guess you are looking at potential low 8 second passes in a pretty heavy car even (3000 lb). I'd guess you are looking at a race car you plan to do some cruising with.
With some quality valvesprings I'd wonder if you needed to change the rockers for how much driving I'd guess you would do.
69 Ratt Vette Jan 28th, 04, 2:15 PM Doug,
I am worried more about the lifters than the springs. All of the car shows I go to are very close to my house, the furthest is 9 miles away. I hit the car shows Friday night, and then Saturday and Sunday mornings. I may even try pulling the valve covers off and loosening the rocker arms after the Sunday morning show until the next Friday. I may get bored with this pretty quick, but who knows. I know of a few guys that got 9000 miles out of a set of lifters on a .680 lift BBC solid roller. That would last me 5 years with this motor.
A 900 hp Ford motor  they exist ? :D
Doug F. Jan 28th, 04, 5:52 PM I'm no expert from my own cars, but looking at all the super comp type engines out there that have pretty decent sticks in them and knowing they don't go crazy changing springs and lifters I think you should be able to find a cam, spring and lifter package that will live a fairly long time for what you want to do (short cruises and track). I'm sure you've researched the parts quite a bit.
