: whats too big for a rear pro street tire
ed3196499 Apr 5th, 04, 1:37 PM I am tubbing the 68 I want to get the tires and wheels first then make the frame mods and weld in the tubs, I have been looking at two options for rear tires 1st is hoosier 31x16.5x16's but they seem a little big the other option is Mickey Thompson sportsmans 29x15x15's, the hoosiers are coslty but I already have 16 in wheels, does any one here run this big a tire? is this too much? anyone got any pics of their tubbed cars with tire sizes? the car is going to be a cruiser not much track time, some but not allot. thanks
kinzli Apr 5th, 04, 3:05 PM Is there such a thing as too big? :D
I can give you some pics if you want. I wouldn't recommend the M/T's Sportsmans, they're pretty hard rubber and don't stick very well.
The Hoosiers would probably stick better, but I'm not sure about sizing.

I don't think so. My 70 is gonna be on 33x19.50 Mickeys. The actual size of these is really close to the 32x14.50 goodyear slicks that came with my 68. My 70 currently sits on 33x16.0 slicks and they are one big tire
Neither car is road capable yet though. Hopefully soon for the 70.....

ed3196499 Apr 5th, 04, 3:54 PM wow maybe I am thinking to small then I thought 33's would be way too big. I think I will go with the hoosiers they are 290 each. how did you order your tubs did you have the tires first?
The tubs were done after I got tires but not because I planned it that way. Basically I bought my cars as abandoned projects and had stuff already done. Anyways I had a local shop do the sheetmetal work on the 68. Below are a couple of pics of the work. They charged me $1500 and got the biggest tubs Summit sells. My 70 came with the sheetmetal (aluminum) already done. I got my wheels for the 68 from a buddy's father in-law who changed his mind on the styling for his street rod project. The only downfall I ran into is when checking to see his backspacing was going to clear the inside ineglected to consider placement of the wheel/tire in the wheel opening and I think they will sit too far in the wheel opening. My 70 has them setting where they should sit IMO. See pics below:

ed3196499 Apr 5th, 04, 10:48 PM Jeff thanks for the pics that helps out allot!! any chance you could tell me how far apart your frame rails are on the 68. just trying to get a rough idea so I can go out to the shop and daydream :D actually I plan on ordering tires here within a week or two and then the tubs and frame rails shortly after that, thanks again
No problem on the pics, glad to help. I'll try to get you the measurments later today. If I recall they are at 23 incheches, but I will verify.
BTW did you see the Pro Street project in the TC classifieds under 1968? Might be worth looking into since it's in Texas.

Jblack Apr 7th, 04, 7:20 AM I'm running 31 x 18.5's on my 64. I could go bigger. But that's what came on the car. I'm running a S&W back half.
Send me e-mail and I can shoot you off a couple of pics. I just finished up all the tin work last night. It turned out pretty good for never doing it before!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

John you have mail
Adam Loose Apr 7th, 04, 10:17 AM I have 31.5x18.5x15 on my 69 chevelle now,and I had 32x17.5x15 on my prostreet 70 nova. The chevelle isn't done yet,but I had no problems with the nova with that size tire.I never heard of anyone having problems with this big of a tire, unless they didn't measure right, and it rubbed somewhere.
mls48341 Apr 7th, 04, 8:12 PM You will be better off building the car around the
wheels and tires. That is the only way to get the
wheelbase and ride height precisely where you want
it.I run Hoosier Quicktime 31.5 x 16.5 x 15 on
15 x 14 Weld Draglites on my firebird and they are
"just right".I have used M.T. Sportsmens as well
but they don't hook and wear quickly. My car is
"in the weeds" but I can get the wheels off without dropping the rear-end do to using a properly layed out offset.Big tire cars are cool! :D
Clint44 Apr 8th, 04, 3:11 PM I've got a pair of BFG Comp T/A 345/55/17 tires for sale in the TC classifieds. These tires are 14" wide and almost 32" tall. Check out the protouring Vennom Chevy II at http://www.vennom.com/ if you want to see what they look like. I bought them for my 69 Elky but my wheeltubs can only handle a 32" tire and these are 31.9".
