I am about to smash this thing. I am running windows Vista and all of a sudden this weekend I could not get to the more popular sites such as Yahoo and Ebay. I can get pretty much everywhere else just not those sites. Tonite I reset IE to the default settings, ran a couple spyware programs and 2 different virus programs. No viruses were found. I finally turned off the protected mode in internet security and was able to get yahoo to come up. Still seems unable to find ebay whether I go through google or type it in directly. Thankfully I can still get here :) I called my service provider (Cable ) when this all started and they said my connection is fine and it is probably something in the security setting but they were not goign to help with it sicne their end was good. Does anyone have any idea what I need to look for or change? Under tools options and the tabs security and advanced, what should my setting be? I can't understand why it is the more popular sites that I am having trouble with. Any help would be greatly appreciated.:pout:

I would question it's a Vista thing as much as an IE thing, but what version of Vista?

On my Vista laptop the Security for IE7 (version 7.0.6001.18000) is simply set to Internet, Enable Protected Mode is checked, and security level for the zone is set to Custom with a multitude of options. To list all the options there as well as under the Advanced tab would be a chore.

When you try to get to Yahoo or eBay and it fails, how does it fail? What error message do you get? Can it not find the page, does it warn of popups or Active-X controls? A few specifics here may help but it'll be hard to diagnose and/or fix without taking some stabs at things.

I have Vista Home premium. When I try to go to Ebay or some other sites I get the message that it might be misspelled. Some times it says it was unable to connect. I now have Yahoo working somehow. This site works well and another hobby site I go to works well. Google works well but a local library site does not. It does not make sense to me why some do and some don't.

Thanks,

Sounds as though Vista did an update over the weekend.
You could look at the Windows update site to see what updated were done and when.
You find a Friday through Sunday update,go to add/remove programs and delete the offender.
Still requires you turn off Automatic Updates so it doesn't reinstall itself.

If you feel you need to uninstall the latest update, that's a personal choice.

Not sure I'd turn off Automatic Updates entirely. You can set the properties to allow you to (1) Install automatically, (2) Download updates but let me choose whether to install them, (3) Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them, or (4) Never check for updates.

I have mine set to the first choice, but that's my option. On everything other than 'Critical', meaning those listed as 'Optional', 'Important', or 'Recommended' instead of choosing the Install Updates button I elect the 'View available updates' link which allows me to choose which updates I wish to install via a simple check box. Generally I never install 'Optional' or any updates concerning drivers for network, video, sound, etc.

They all work for me on IE, FireFox, and Safari.

IE has been upsetting lately, there is an update, and after it is installed it won't let you install software from a network resource. You have to go in and change the multitude of custom settings to get it back to normal... Puke.... FireFox has always been dependable for me. I haven't ever got one of those, "there is a problem and IE must close" windows for Firefox.

Big DI would doubt that Firefox would ever report a problem and say that Internet Explorer must close. :D

I use primarily IE v7 and have never had any big problems. One exception is it doesn't open .PDF links, hasn't for quite a while and don't know why. Maybe it doesn't like my full version of Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional. I keep Firefox (2.0.017), Safari (3.1.1) and Opera (9.61) handy to check readability of my web sites since all four browsers tend to have their own way of displaying things. I only use Firefox when there's a .PDF link involved or I need to use one of the add ons such as Adsense Notifier to check my Google Adsense information, MeasureIt to see how big a column or photo is, and one called ColorZilla to determine a color of anything on the screen.

In my opinion, they all have good and bad features. The user just has to decide for themselves what the tradeoffs are. To each their own.

Dale ,was just to keep it from reinstalling.
Figured he'd return with results and go from there on the best setting for Auto Updated.
BTW ,I use your option 2.
Guess it was confusing.

Not sure on Acrobat 6.0 Professional, but on Adobe Reader 8 these boxs must be checked.

Do you go to these 2 sites a lot? First, dump all of your temp files, history files and cookies. Some temp files you have to delete manually.

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Local Settings\Temp

look in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc for a file called hosts, open it with notepad and look for anything referencing ebay. If it is there put a ; in front of the line, save it and try again.

Don't ask me why or how but things started working today. As good as normal. I came home and turned it on and everything works great. Someone said it may be the DNS thing from my cable company:confused::confused:

Na... get Free Internet Window Washer.. and it will clean everything out. It will also clean up the .dat file that isn't flushed when you normally clear temp files or delete history. CCleaner is also a good tool to use, it will clean the register and temp files, etc, but it won't touch the index.dat file if I remember correctly.

A DNS (Domain Name Server) issue with your ISP, would definately cause you a problem. websites are made of of IP addresses with four octets... For istance, www.yahoo.com is, 69.147.76.15. A DNS, translates the name into the IP address. If is starts happening again, put int he IP address and see if you don't get yahoo. If you do, its a DNS issue, if you don't it is possibly something else.
