There is quite a few neat things to see in St Louis, try poking around http://www.explorestlouis.com/visitors/see.asp

If you've got a car, avoid the interstate on Friday during rush hour, last time I went through I drove about 3 MPH on average; another thing, be sure to be inside before dark, some parts of STL are rough at night.

When my daughter went to college there we visited. Stayed at the old YMCA now a very nice hotel next to the old train station which is now a indoor mall. One evening we took the tram down to the old town next too the Arch, lots of shops and good restaurants, its real touristy so lots of cops and they make sure there aren't any problems. Didn't have any problems BUT we were forwarned not to run around downtown at night. If you have time (check on hours) Grants Park is pretty cool, Budwieser Clydesdales, lots of historic stuff, and a great exotic animal zoo, with emphasis on deer/elk and african impala type animals.

You didn't say exactly where in ST Lou. but if your downtown you can kill a couple of hours by visiting the arch and the museum under the arch. Last time I was in town on similar circumstances was Oct. of '01 so access was limited.

Check the hockey schedule?

I'll second the comment on running around after dark. I walked up the street to BB King's Blues bar and restaurant. Walked back about 11:00pm....

Soulard neighborhood is 3/4 mile from the arch. Built by the French a couple of hundred years ago it's very similar to the French Quarter in New Orleans. There's a bar on almost every corner and blues everywhere. Anheuser-Busch brewery tour is there.

The Arch is pretty cool to go up in! That is unless you are clostraphobic. They have a museum of sorts in the lower level. I think it got flooded in 93 so I don't know what is in there presently.
Otherwise there are lots of bars down near the waterfront you can visit! Lots of women too! Or so I was told, my wife wouldn't let me see for myself!:D

Below the Arch is a museum about the expansion to the west, and from there you can go up into the Arch. You take a little pod like elevator to the top. I haven't been up there since i was a teen.

In the afternoon, there is the St louis Zoo, (free to everyone) an Art Museum, History Museum, all in Forest Park.

As said before, the AB Brewery tour is pretty cool (and free) and not InBev yet.

all the above plus there is a new casino downtown. if you are going to be here just 1 day you won't have the time to see much of these things. ride the metrolink to get around downtown. just assuming that's where you are headed.

If you do nothing else...check out the arch. Go up in it. The movie on how they made it is pretty cool. A timeless piece of architecture.

Now...if you want to see something you'll never see anywhere else...check out the "City Museum"

Wow...this is one incredible place. It is sort of a crazy extreme playground but is incredibly interesting to anyone. This guy buys a shoe factory. Then he goes and buys old factory parts and lots of other things from other places, hires a bunch of welders and artist and makes a fantasy land out of the pieces. Words can't describe it and the photos don't do it justice. I believe it is open late and the age of the crowd increases with time. You will not be dissapointed.

If I recall...STL also has their fare share of haunted houses this time of year. I remember one being in the old Lemp brewery beer storage caverns or something. Kind of cool if you are into that.

The second largest brewery in town is Schlafly's. Available thoughout town and at their Tap Room brew pub.

Last thought...even though the Soulard district might be 3/4 of a mile from the Arch and great for more local flavor compared to "the landing"...I'm not sure I'd recommend walking there.
Have fun.
