: I think I found everyones Matching #'s Engines
136679ss Oct 20th, 08, 10:16 AM If you are recreating serial numbers there has got to be some punishment by law wouldn't you think? Sick part is I know of places like this that can recreate the broached effect so NOBODY will able to tell. #'s matching is becoming a LOT harder to prove.

69396ss Oct 20th, 08, 11:30 AM I don't think any laws are being broken as Engine Component stipulations to the VIN tampering law don't apply prior to 1983 I believe.
Unethical for sure, but it's an acceptable practice in the Corvette arena.
Matching numbers no longer means original engine.
While the Corvette crowd accepts it only because it has grown to uncontrollable levels, the "Chevelle" Community frowns aggressively against it for good reason.
It's a reality however that your better off to be aware of than ignore.
Verle Oct 20th, 08, 12:15 PM I would be interested in seeing a block that they have "broached".
At least some states do not distinguish between years when defining VIN tampering.
I will respectfully disagree with your statement: "it's an acceptable practice in the Corvette arena."
In NCRS judging, blocks that are detected as having been "restamped" are penalized, from a minimum of 25 points to a full disqualification, depending on the circumstances.
Dave Birdwell Oct 20th, 08, 1:45 PM Technically, I don't think the partial VIN can be construed to be a true VIN number. It was just a way to identify what vehicle the component came from. A partial VIN could be one of many different models, so it isn't a true Serial number.
Bill Pritchard Oct 20th, 08, 2:16 PM Engines Limited (as well as several other shops offering the same services) have been advertising in Hemmings Motor News every month for as many years as I can remember, so this stuff is nothing new. Anyone who pays big bucks for a car based solely on "matching numbers" is just asking to get screwed
ftgallant Oct 20th, 08, 2:31 PM Those guys in ad advertise in Hemmings also. I called them on a set of heads a few years ago and they scared me with their pricing at the time.
Chris R Oct 24th, 08, 2:22 AM They must be making money gouging people. I remember reading thier ads almost 20 years ago in Hemmings.
Robinls5 Oct 24th, 08, 8:20 PM If engines and other items on say, a 70 Chevelle were stamped with partial Vins. Why would the auto makers do this ? Just to give Bubba a job ? It was a Fed. Law. If it made no difference, Why do replacement engines have " CE " on them? Would a dealer RE- STAMP your blown engine to match the engine they just installed-DAAA.
Ask a Patent Attorney about re-stamping parts to appear as they were org. parts. Cars,Trucks, furnace, lawnmowers or any item with a stamped ser. number. What do you think........................

I agree.
It's not VIN tampering, the true serial number is on the VIN tag, not on the motor.
I seriously doubt that anyone besides us cares one iota about any numbers on the motor of a 40 year old car.
69396ss Oct 24th, 08, 8:43 PM Fed Law excludes component part restamping prior to 1983 (or there about) as criminal.
