Hey guys the 540's going down for the winter and she's going to get freshened up...(stay tuned for some cool stuff..heheheh) It's got about 500 miles on it and about 6 passes down the 1/8th. When you guys freshen up a motor do you change the oil pump? I figure $80 bucks would be cheap insurance, and just put a new one in. graemlins/beers.gif

No actually I don't. There is very little to wear in the oil pump. I have reused many oil pumps that the clearances checkout and there is no grooves and or gouges in the rotors or housing.

We would run several seasons with the same pump on everything from circle track motors to 1800hp blower motors.

But if you are in doubt, then yes $80 is probably pennies on the dollar compared to the investment that you have in your 540.

Is this required maintenance or just moding the engine some more? graemlins/sad.gif

The motor will be going down for "freshening" because I'll need much lower compression for the setup I'm putting together. The motor has been converted to EFI and should be running by this weekend (N/A).
It will have....

2000cfm throttle body
83lb injectors
F.A.S.T. bank to bank system....

I'll let you know how it goes....

After talking to you at CB'03,I knew it was only a matter of time before you switched to DFI,Shannon. Should help your gas mileage, too. :D

To answer your original question, if you weren't having any oil problems before I would leave it alone although if the short block is getting all new parts might as well replace the oil pump too.

shannont, keep me in the loop with how the build-up goes. i was thinking about turbos on my 540 too!!! Procharger is another one of my ideas as well. What kind of compression are you talking about running. i am at 9.6:1 now. what EFI are you running? pics would be great too.

I'm not dead set on running turbos on the 540. As you guys know headers are a nightmare for turbo setups. They can cost around 2K for headers alone. We got the LT1 headers for the cheap price of $1500, because we were the first to ever try it, and they still didn't fit. I will have forced induction of some kind. It may even be a big nasty Procharger, I'm just not sure. The Procharger would be the easiest and the most cost effective. TPR usually makes the wrong decision and goes for the toughest challenge..... graemlins/clonk.gif To answer the wife question.... Yes, we finally worked things out. It wasn't looking very good for a while, but after I had Tony Sopranos boys drop by and tune her up she was fine... :D Unfortunately the 67' was sold before we worked things out. The good news is I have the green light to get WHATEVER I want...(imagine that) Believe it or not the 540ci has been squeezed into the former Twin Turbo 4th gen Camaro.... yes that was a very custom job and yes it's verrrry tight. If you guys are interested I'll link some pics of the install. This is what we plan to run.... hopefully this weekend. IF.. it runs I'll post some video clips of it, if you guys are interested.

2000cfm Force-EFI throttle body
83lbs injectors
FAST bank to bank system
MSN Digital 7
NX Gemini Twin 2 stage kit. (500 hp capable)
Weldon 2025 with dial a flow...with a whole bunch of C-16 :D
