Hey, what's up sorry about the newbie question but i couldn't find the answer anywhere else. I am looking into buying a SS chevelle and I found one but I am not sure if it is a true SS or not. The thing is making me wounder is it is a 1970 SS with a 454 and all the trim pieces but it has an automatic on the column. Can anyone tell me if they ever made a SS like this or is it a clone. Thanks for the help in advanced.
Thanks,
Joey

Quite a few column shifted SS's out there with bench seats.
Hi there and welcome to the board. Some 70 SS cars did indeed come with column shift automatics. Without a build sheet you cant really tell about the 69-71's. If it were me and the buyer cant produce a build sheet and wants a good buck for the car, (I don't have one for my car) I would make an effort at least find the date codes on the block, rearend, and the VIN on the trans and compare to the build date on the trim tag. Most cloners wouldn't go to this extent.

Yes they column shift autos
Things to look for on an SS:
SS cowl induction hood
1 1/4" front sway bar and rear sway bar
Boxed lower control arms on rear
12 bolt rear
Front disk brakes
Round gauges in the dash, not sweep speedometer
NO woodgrain inserts on dash and/ or console
Sunvisors that can connect to a bracket in center
Malibus came wih chrome trim that went on top of the doors and front fenders, look for evidence that these holes have been filled.
That's all I can think of...if it has all of that it's either an SS or a damn good clone that's prolly worth having if the price is right.

Welcome Joey
Check to see if the 454 is the original engine. I don't think there were any Malibu's with the 454. Someone here will correct me if I am wrong. :D

Theres quite a few knowledgeable Marylanders on this site that could possibly look at the Chevelle with you and could tell you if the Chevelle is a real SS or if it is a clone, where in Maryland is it?
