Does anyone know if it is possible to remove/replace a timing gear w/ a double roller w/out dropping the engine and oil pan?

Most references I've seen call for the pan to be dropped or at least lowered. On my 67 w/ a 396 I have a notched oil pan w/ very little clearance between the pan and crossmember. It looks like the last time it was installed they put on one of the rubber one piece gaskets.

I'm tired of the gear whine ... it was cool when I bought the car ... but since it is my daily driver it is getting really old really quick

Please advise. Replacing my gears w/ a chain is something I would do this weekend if I knew I could have it ready to drive to work on Monday,

Thanks!

You can do the work while the engine is in the car. You may need to cut the very front portion of the pan gasket, but can use sealer when you reassemble. No need to lower the pan.

One of my first purchases was a harmonic balance install/deinstall tool. Makes your life much easier than pounding on the balancer, saves possible damage to the thrust bearings. These big block balancers can be a bear.

I hear you about the gear whine, I can see how it would be annoying. The quiet gear drives aren't too bad.

I did it on a small block awhile ago. After getting the old cover off. I ground down the inside corners of the new cover alittle. And with alittle effort it went in. If you don't want to deal with this again get e two peice cover.

I replaced the timing chain cover gasket on a 70 402 while the engine was in the car. No need to move oil pan.
