Well, I'm racing in a heads up class tomorrow, so I went to the test and tune tonight just to see how it runs. This was the first time out with the 496 and the first time for the car! Only thing I did all night was moved my timing from 38 down to 36. Anyways here's the five passes:

1st pass

60' 1.747
330' 4.993
1/8 7.746
MPH 88.74
1000 10.146
1/4 12.18
MPH 110.48

15 lbs in slicks, front tires at 36, 38 degrees total timing, launched with loading converter to 2200.

2nd pass:
60' 1.728
330 4.959
1/8 7.698
MPH 89.25
1000 10.085
1/4 12.111
MPH 111.37

Everything same as first pass

3rd Pass:

60 1.677
330 4.878
1/8 7.608
MPH 89.39
1000 9.993
1/4 12.021

Same tire pressure moved timing to 36 total, launched at 1200(barely above idle)

4th pass:

60 1.640
330 4.829
1/8 7.552
MPH 89.61
1000 9.929
1/4 11.951
MPH 111.66

Everything same just tried to hit it harder off line

5th Pass:

60 1.647
330 4.810
1/8 7.516
MPH 90.02
1000 9.883
1/4 11.898
MPH 111.95

14 lbs in slicks and same launch technique

I think it's 60 footing decent for stock rear suspension with the original bushings. I removed the front swaybar, other than that the suspension is stock. I have a habit of everytime I ran I shifted out of 1st at about 4600-4800 rpm. I just got nervous and shift to fast. Just thought I'd put these up and show you. Tomorrow I need to slow down, the coordinator of the heads up race clued me in that high 11's is the slow car of the class, so I need to run 12.10's! We'll see what happens! What do you guys think?

Matt,

Congratulations on getting the car out to the track for the first time. That's always a nerve racking experience.

What is your engine/car combo. Just based on your signature, I would have expected low 11's @ 120 MPH even with a tuneup that is off. You've got what appears to be a good combo if all of the supporting parts are there. Do your heads have large valves or any bowl work? I hope I didn't offend.

Good Luck

My heads have a lot of bowl work, 2.19/1.88 valves, and they have been dowel pinned and matched perfectly to the intake. I'm expecting it to go deeper into the elevens I just have a lot of suspension to work out. Lastnight there was a fluid spill on the track at 9:45 and they close at 10 so I didn't get to make a last pass. No offense taken, the car still kind of scares the crap out of me, the only thing I had before this was a 14 second Nova, this is a totaly different thing to launch. It was getting to be a nice night when the track closed. If I can get myself to keep it in first a little longer I should do better graemlins/clonk.gif , I'm still shifting out of second at about 5200, so I can also play with that some. I'm going to try to get lift bars and an air bag before the next heads up race in mid July and do some testing so I can maybe run in the fast class. It's been pulling the left front wheel about 6" in the air and leaving the right one on the ground, so all in all yes, I do believe it should go better. Thanks for the reply's. :D

Matt,

The thing that was concerning me is the MPH and 60'. They both jive, meaning it hooked well and was a pretty clean pass.

I didn't realise you were shifting so low. Where are you shifting on the other gear changes? I would expect about a 6300 RPM shift point to be optimal for a decent set of heads, that cam, and 496 cubes. I know there are several other guys that run that cam in 496's so they may be able to provide some input on shift point.

Regardless 11's first time out is nothing to sneeze at. Be sure to look all the little details over since it's a new combo. First on the list would be to make sure you are getting 100% throttle opening.

Keep plugging away and good luck graemlins/beers.gif

Very nice, but I see deep 11 easy. I have a very simular combo other than the larger stroke and my cam is the F10. I have put a 3000 Huges converter in mine so my 60' should get me nice in the 11s. You should see if you are getting full throttle with that mph, seems a little low. Very nice and have lots of fun wiht it!

Are you running pump gas? What how much is your cam advanced? No I'm not I run 110 at the track. The cam has been degreed by the machine shop per the cam card.
