: Picking out a "new" rear end
One Bad 70 Oct 15th, 08, 10:58 PM Ok so I've got a 1970 chevelle that i'm trying to prepare for a big block. Its a 307/t350 10 bolt. I have been patient in finding a replacement rear end. my future plans are something like a 468 with 500-600hp that probably will only got to the track a few times a year. (I'm nice to my car.) I have found a 1965 buick skylark rear end. And I'm curious to know if it will bolt in like the 64-67 chevelles.Or if it will even fit at all. Do I even need to get a 12 bolt if i don't have a trans brake or ever beat up my rear?
ss496chevelle Oct 16th, 08, 12:05 AM Gil,
U might want to look at building a ford 9in..Its a lot stronger then a 12 bolt..I had a 12 bolt in my 69 chevelle and I scatered it with my 496 (650hp)..I have yet to hurt it, even with 4 grand drops at the track with slicks.
there are a lot of companies out there that build ford 9's for A-bodies..I think total I have about $2300 into mine and that is with rear disk brakes (center section was $1100 of it)..Just another option for ya
Jim Mac Oct 16th, 08, 12:14 AM Are you going to the chiva swap meet on the 25th at SIR? Once in awhile a 12 bolt pops up. I missed out on one for $100 because I had a lapse in good judgement. Throw a ad on craigslist, sometimes you can get lucky there, but when they do pop up, be ready with cash and get there quick. Jim

I know what you mean. Last Sep. i missed out on a guy selling one for 600. but I was deployed. Didn't know about the swap meet. Thanks for the heads up.
big gear head Oct 16th, 08, 10:05 AM A Moser 12 bolt should hold up fine in your car. They are stronger than any of the original Chevy 12 bolt rear ends. You can get them with 33 spline axles and Eaton posi. As for the '65 Skylark rear end, it is probably the BOP 8.2 10 bolt, which is just barely better than what you have now.
camarofreak Oct 16th, 08, 10:28 AM contact team member tlowe he builds 12 bolts and others and warranties his work!! great guy and has shipped them all over the U.S.!!

Another 500 to 600 hp motor, they grow likes grapes around here:cool::cool:
So here is what I think, since you have no idea how much Hp the real number will be, save your bucks and use the 10 bolt. I have one in a 71 with a 427 and a TH350, bought a new eaton from BGH, new Moser axles and put her together. Car is heavy, I'm guessing around 3600 with my fat ass in the seat. Unless you are doing 1.30 60 ft times and running in the 10s, that rear will hold up just fine.
I also think those $100 12 bolts are few and far between so the suggestion that BGH gave you about a new Moser 12 was worth consideration.
tlowe Oct 16th, 08, 8:28 PM i would tell you to run the 10 bolt until you have the new motor/tranny combo decided on. then gear up a 12 bolt to match. a ford 9" is not really stronger than a 12 bolt. both can be built equally well. the 9" has a advantage of quicker gear swaps. that is if you have extra 3rd members. tom
One Bad 70 Oct 16th, 08, 10:10 PM Thanks guys. I've been reading these threads for years but I've never been able to get a definite answer. I'll try with the 10 bolt and go from there I guess. Like I said, I don't go to the track and have no intention on getting slicks or the like. :noway:
Jim Mac Oct 16th, 08, 10:19 PM Hey, ive got a $100 12 bolt under my chevelle! granted I lucked out into it at a yard sale. But, for the camaro, that 12 bolt cost me $500. so I guess it averages out to 300 each. Jim

There's a very short "12 Bolt Swap" article in the new December 08 "Hot Rod" magazine pages 124-125, it includes a nice what fit's what table on page 125. Check it out............

What do you think Freddie?

big gear head Oct 17th, 08, 10:04 PM I like the 60. If I didn't already have the 9 inch in my car I'd be looking at one.

tlowe Oct 18th, 08, 10:16 PM those strange 60's are real heavy compared to a 12 bolt. tom
