Hey have any of you ever started a project with a total frame change. Im buying a 1970 Chevelle but the rear of the frame has some issues. I would feel better getting a "new" frame before getting under way. What other year cars share the same frame? The guy only wanted 2700 for the car, so I'm not going to complain about having to spend the money on another frame. What do you think.??

Brian,

From your brief description, it sounds like you'd be better off with another frame just from a piece of mind standpoint. You could wind up spending quite a bit of money on the frame if it needs straightening or patching, and still always have it in the back of your head long after it's done.

Without seeing the car, I imagine for $2700 there will be other issues as well.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Frames are somewhat easy to come by, at least around here. Ive seen them pop up every few months on Craigslist. Some complete rollers for under $600.

I assume 2 door?
Hard top or convertible?
68-72 A-bodies (2 door) should be the same. Skylark, Cutlass, Lemans will be the same .

This is good reading too... http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=168348

Good luck

I put a 68 cutlass fame under my 68 ss. From what I've read and discovered all 2 door 68-72 a-body frames are the same demensionally. The convertable frames are boxed and you will pay more for them. All 4-door, station wagon and Elcamino frames are 4 inches longer in the center section. You should be able to pick one up for around $500. or do what I did and buy another less desierable car and cut it up and use what you need out of it and sell the rest in pieces. My frame and soem other needed inner sheet meatal ended up being free after selling stuff and I still have some good hard to find parts left.:)
