I need a 454, 500 hp combo . 65 Chevelle m 22 4 spd. 3.31 12 bolt posi .The car has a small block for now. I leaning toward the Edelbrock combo . What intake , head , cam and piston combo works best ? What intake will fit under my stock hood ? I have a 92 454 block , cast crank and rods . I know I need a different oil pan and adapter for the clutch z bar . I have located these parts , I just need a good hp combo. Thanks

a cheap way to go would be 9.5-10 to 1 compression, 049 or 781 oval ports with 2.19/1.88 valves, air gap intake, flat tappet hydraulic cam around the size of a CC XE274, 750dp or if you want to spend some extra cash on a carb a 950hp, i like 2" headers on a 454, i know alot of guys on here like the 1 3/4" headers, i just don't like the idea of my primary exhaust tubes being smaller than my exhaust valves. i know a solid cam would make more power, but i'm gun-shy of using flat tappet solids in a 454 since i've seen several that are cam eaters. but i think that would put you real close to 500hp for ALOT LESS than the Edelbrock package, since the heads are over $1500 for the pair complete. even with your gears that should put you into the 11's 1/4mi i would think, especially since a 65 chevelle is lighter than the 68-72's.

Jay,

I'm with Mr 4 speed.

I built what is known here as a BSE, which means very high compression for pump gas, with closed chambered, oval port, oversize valve, 702 heads, it makes 10.5 to 1 static compression.

Cam it for a lower DCR, I get 8.033 with a 288/296 H110 Ultradyne cam.

Machine it for a small quench, (.040) and throw in the other good stuff, air gap. carb, 1 3/4 headers, and you have one scary, ***** in your pants engine.

Thanks everyone, the only question left is what intake for my stock hood. Also where do I get a good set of affordable heads for this Gen V block ? The Edelbrock set are about 1600.00

The question you have to ask is if the old heads these guys are takling about will seal on the GenV block. Might want to run some searches here to see if its been addressed. And old set of heads will set you back $100-200. Another $100 for valves, and figure anywhere from $300-500 at the machine shop, then springs/retainers/etc.

Someone here posted they had an Ultradyne 280/288 cam for sale. Search it down, that's the cam you want. Install it as per the cam card +6. Yes, its a bit more $$ than a regular Comp, but well worth it IMHO.

And 1.75" header primaries for sure. 2" tubes will let the motor breathe between 5000-7000 much better, but the smaller tubes will keep your low end torque.

With an M22 and 3.31 you'll want all the low end you can muster, its not much gear. Use a centerforce dual friction clutch. Its a bit 'grabby', but you might frag anything less.

Here's some more food for thought...

Those heads will run you 1/2 of the aluminum ones you are considering.

427l88, I thought I read somewhere that you could not use MK IV heads on a MK V. I guess by reading the post you attached that there is a performance Cast MK V head out there.Maybe I should look those up. There sure is a lot to consider w/ big block build ups. Also that cam seems to be very popular here.

U can run the gen 4 heads on the mark 5 block. get ahold of the people at scroggins & dickey or the dealer over in oregon salinee I belive. They sell a plug kit for $35 or so that U use on the mark 5 block so U can run the older heads. I was going to do this with a mark 5 502 and run the older closed chamber SQ ports with the stock pistons would make 9.9 or so comp ratio. I asked about the success they been haveing with the kit and the guy said they couldnt keep them in stock havent had any problems with them. If youre iffy just sell the block and buy an older block. The mark will be a four bolt U should be able to sell it and get a good 70's 454 block ( try and find a #289 casting 72-75 much better than the late 70's early 80's blocks). Like everyone is saying run 10-1 comp, with 3000-6500 rpm cam , and a set of oval ports with 2.19/1.88 with some cleanup work, a dual plane intake( I was told a wieand stealth will fit under 64-67 chevelle hood), and 750/800DP holley, will make easy500+HP are great street motors.

From what I have heard the Gen V blockoff kit is not 100% effective, Since you do not already have a set of Gen IV heads I would not "go there" so to speak. You can run any Gen V or VI head and most/all avail aftermarket heads are compatible with the Gen V/VI motors now.

You could use the L-29 heads http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?action=prod_detail&catid=281&pid=215

Those seem like a great way to go for a Mark V motor, as they are the big block "vortec" heads with 99 cc chambers so they will work with your stock flat top pistons.
