I hope this is the right forum to post this. I finally found the vin stamped in my 1970 396 block. It is a 350 hp ctx block. I was hoping that someone might have a database of chevelle vin numbers to see if this car is still around so hopefully it can be re-united where it should have always been. ity is stamped by the oil filter so it was hard to read, but here is what I have. 01234451 or 01224451 the fourth number is really hard to see, but if it is out there I will check again. Thanks for any and all help!! Justin

I think it's great that you are trying to reunite the engine with the car.

Actually, my father "lost" the 396 for my '70 within the last 10 or so years, and I believe it was the 350 hp version. The chances that the one you have is the one originally in my car would be slim, but you never know.

How can one determine that a engine goes with the car?

How can one determine that a engine goes with the car?

If the last eight digits of the VIN on the dash match the eight digits stamped on the block.

I would make a connection with Dale McIntosh if you are able to determine the numbers. He has a site where he tries to reunite documentation and/or drive line parts with the original cars. You'll find his contact info on this page. http://www.chevellestuff.com/index.htm
