Is there a formula for the ideal rear gear and first gear for acceleration? Seems I've seen this before but I dont know what the formula is or what the ideal ratio's are.

There are a few of other variables, like weight, tire size, second gear ratio, etc.

IMHO,a 2.88 1st gear T10 and a 3.31-3.55 rear gear would be perfect.

10:1 or better has always been my rough bogey.

I'm running a Super T-10 with a 2.64 1st and 4.30's out back (11.352:1) and 29" tires.

Some people think this is too much, but my combo really seems to like it. My SCR is a little low for my camshaft so the bottom end isn't quite where I would like it so a little extra gear helps make up the difference.

In the future I might try a set of 4.10's.

Thanks guys, this is the info I was looking for. I'm running a 3.31 rear gear and soon a 3.27 1st gear Tremec. I was hoping I got the right gear ratio, looks like I did OK.

I've got the same transmission (TKO-500) with 355 gears. A 3.31 gear would be better for daily driving, but I really like how the 355 gears launch my chevelle when I get traction at the track. You should be happy with your 3.31's with that steep 1st gear in the Tremec.

I always favored a 220 first with a 3.90 or 4.11
rear gear. The ratio's are much closer.

Gearing is important though because anything
less than 3.55's with a 220 first gear you'll
be working the clutch especially if you are
cammed.
