: Anyone make a rear end cover with a fill hole? (12 bolt)
Alwhite00 Oct 14th, 08, 1:19 PM i just went through changing my rear end fluid & it was a chore. I have no-hops on it and they run directly in front of the fill plug, Turned a 15 minute job into an hour & a half.
Anybody make a good looking cover for a 12 bolt with a fill plug?
Thx.

Georgia69 Oct 14th, 08, 2:14 PM I have a nice looking Moser cover on my 12-bolt, and it has a fill-hole, but beware using anything other than the factory fill hole...you can severely overfill your differential with unhappy results. See thread...

d1_bradley Oct 14th, 08, 4:10 PM To prevent overfilling, just leave the factory plug out while filling. As it starts to run over, STOP filling.

He can't, as the no-hops block the fill hole. I have the same problem, and whenever I change my fluid I'll have to get a different cover.

I have one on my 12 bolt but I don't have no hop bars.
mr 4 speed Oct 14th, 08, 8:23 PM buy one of the kits that allow you to install a drain plug in a tranny pan. Put the "drain plug" into the rear end cover at the same height as the factory fill hole in the housing.
Now its a fill hole instead of a drain plug ;)
Cheap and effective.

Same thing I was thinking..
Alwhite00 Oct 15th, 08, 6:39 AM I thought of that too, Thought the hole was pretty small though, I'll look into it.

mr 4 speed Oct 15th, 08, 8:03 AM you could always drill a hole into the cover, weld a nut on the back and get a pipe plug.
Chicken Coupe Oct 15th, 08, 9:47 AM I used a Moser cover. Added 2 quarts and was no where near the cover filer hole.
1975 Chiltons covering 70-76 states that "the fill level is correct when the fluid is level with the filler hole." Stock covers had no extra filler plug so they mean the one in the side of the casting.
GM assembly manual states 4.35 lbs for the 12 bolt.
Using this conversion site http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/weight2volume 4.35 lbs of petroleum oil is 69.6 oz divided by 32 (qt) that's 2.174 quarts.

I can sell you this cover brand new from Moser for $152. Payable through paypal. Good piece. You can fill through the hole on the cover as long as you don't put more than 3 quarts in it. Trevor @ 5 Star Muscle
IndianaSS67 Oct 15th, 08, 8:25 PM I just did the tranny drain plug on my differential cover. I couldn't get the old axle plug out because it was stripped. The tranny plug worked out fine. The fill hole is small but it works. I've got a 10 bolt and I'll leave it this way for now, until I find a cover I like for a good price, or I take the car to a shop to have the old plug removed.

get the moser cover with a fill plug.. and a piece of 1/4" plex glass..
get a die for that size pipe thread(don't know it off top of head, sorry)
cut threads into the plexglass, cut a slot on the face for a straight slot screwdriver..
install the plexglass plug in the factory fill hole with teflon paste on threads..
now you have a fill site, like a holley fuel bowl..
and can fill useing the covers plug without overfillingit..
cost ,not including the cover.. 2 bucks as long as you don't have to buy the die..for the thread..
hit up a friend with a tap and die set
I have the Chrome Moroso on Old Blue:
