: More Manifold Tweaking...

I finally decided to try a spacer with my new Dart rect-oval manifold. Due to hood clearance issues and the height of the Dart manifold the biggest spacer I can use is a 1/2". I already had a .5" open wood spacer that I used to use with the RPM manifold. So yesterday the only changes to the car was the .5" spacer and I went up a little more on the rear squirters (.040-.045). The car felt good leaving the line although the 60' times weren't great. I made a total of 7 passes and the 60' times in order were 1.57, 1.56, 1.56, 1.56, 1.58, 1.55, 1.53. We had quite a bit of rain the night before and we also had a downpour during the race yesterday that caused a 2.5 hour delay. As the track temperature cooled down and the air improved the 60' times started coming around. ET wise the car looks to have picked up .04 and .5 MPH on average over the previous week in nearly identical air. The DA last weekend was 3,879 worst and 3,592 best.

At 3,700' last week the car ran:
60' - 1.556
330 - 4.476
660 - 6.956
MPH - 99.33
1,000' - 9.111
1/4 - 10.942
MPH - 122.87

At 3,600' yesterday the car ran:
60' - 1.565
330' - 4.475
660' - 6.934
MPH - 99.70
1,000' - 9.072
1/4 - 10.887
MPH - 123.98

So the air was ~100' better, but a ~.06 gain in ET even though I was .01 slower in 60'. I still haven't tried any jetting changes, so there may be a little more in it there.

I managed to go four rounds in a very tough sportsman field yesterday. I should have won the last round but I broke out. As I mentioned above we had a rain delay of nearly 2.5 hrs. When we got back to racing I wasn't sure what the car was going to run because so much had changed (starting line, air, sun was going down, etc...). I dialed a 10.90 thinking that the car might spin due to the rain, but the car ran the best 60' of the day at 1.53. I ran 10.872@119.16 on the brakes hard. I had the guy treed but the air had droped to 3,074'.would have prolly ran 10.82 all out :(

I must say I'm very happy with this Dart intake. Contrary to what many said this intake works! Just goes to show you every car/combo is different and there is more than one way to skin a cat ;) I'm looking forward to the fall. My car has never ET'd/MPH'd this well in such heat. NHRA correction factors (prolly a little generous) show a 10.41@129.75

I would have guessed a better ET with the cooler track surface/air temp after the rain. Especially with a 600' drop in DA. So I am a bit surprised you dialed in a 10.90. But then again, I am an excellent Monday morning QB :D so what do I know? Your 60's were pretty consistent though. Congrats on going all of those rounds also. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
What carb are you running and what jetting at those DA's?
I can't imagine how slow my car would run in 3600' air either. Last week I went out and raced in 2400' air and I complained on how bad the air was. Guess I should just shut-up and race. Imagine what you could run at 500' and below!!

Dood deal dude graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I'm sure there is more in there.

Hey you mentioned you were going to send your carb off to Pro Systems for a little rework :D
You might even see what Patrick says about a 1000HP.
Most BB's respond quite nicely to 850DP's and a 1000HP is basically a really really warmed over 850, kinda sorta ;)

When is that going to get worked into the plan :D
I don't nind spending other peoples money tongue.gif :D

Jim,

My last pass before the rain was at 5:49PM and the DA was 3.402, so it only dropped another ~300'. The main difference was that the starting line was better! I had ran several 10.88s/10.89s during the day. I figured the starting line would probably be worse after the rain as track prep at Commerce isn't the best. Live and learn, I'm adding all these weekly experiences to my list and I'm slowly seeing some progress. Maybe by next year I'll be a decent racer.

Thrasher,

Thanks for the comments. I would still like to work with Pro Systems but honestly I think I would be better off just buying one of their carbs. I think they get $350-$450 for rebuilding/recalibrating used carbs. I could probably buy a new 1000HP for a few hundred more. If it improved I could sell my 950, if not I could Ebay the 1000. I will probably try a new carb next year. Between purchasing a weather station and a $700+ intake I think I'm tapped out for this year smile.gif

Yes it might cost you that much for them to rework your carb...
But have you heard what they sell their new carbs for

I would suggest not purchasing a new carb off Ebay.I have been screwed twice by doing it that way, both of them were HP model carbs.

Did that intake recieve any special portwork or hand blending before you recieved it?

Maybe it came from Wilson Manifolds ;)
Naaaaa then it would have been around 1000.+

Naaaaa then it would have been around 1000.+ </font>[/QUOTE]You might say that ;) The intake was matched to a Mr. Gasket 101 ( I think, very close to a FelPro 1205, too). The plenum was hand blended and it' s a CNC'd intake. Here are a few pics:

The intake came from Lukovich Racing. The intake is pictured with a dominator flange adapter whcih I'm not currently running. I thought while I had them preparing the intake I might as well get a dominator adapter. I might need it on my next planned combo ;)

I am in the market for a 950HP.

Thanks,

Please refer back to my first post about this new manifold. My car slowed .07 in 60' yet was quicker at every increment of the track including through the stripe! I learned a while back from my friend that races Super Stock Modified that if you really want to see what the car is doing you need to calculate the splits. Look at the 60-330, 330-660, 660-1,000 and 1,000-1,320 splits. You can then get an idea about what is going on. It's also a good tool to use if you suspect wheel spin. To make a meaningful comparison from one run to the next you have to keep good records (DA, tire pressure, burnout and staging, launch RPM, shift points, etc...).

Jim I posted about it but nobody took interest and the post just faded away...

Did I come off like an idiot or a know it all

Maybe it was just too much of a story and people didn't believe it?

Dunno but here it is

DAYM kj, I guess it has some work done to it :D

You do know that the 1205 gasket is the small block small race port gasket right ;)

I'm just saying that if you're 60 was quicker, your car would run quicker yet. My car is pretty much stable once I get the car launched, which is good,my 60 will make or break me.I havent been changing any parts lately,I don't touch it during racing season, just normal maintenance.

way to go Ken. your using the glasstec hood, correct? is it the 2 piece bonded top and bottom or just the outer shell? mine is a 2 piece and i was able to take carfull measurements and cut a 15" hole in the bottom piece for the air filter to stick up into. im using 2-1" spacers on my s/b and if i go to a 3" filter i think i can get one more 1" spacer on. will try this next trip. What Kenny left out was that we stood there and watched the S/Pro class run after the lengthy rain delay and they were pretty consistently running way slower than their dial-in. That led us to believe the starting line was junk.

The S/Pro cars are usually very close to the dial.

He really shoulda/coulda won that race and went on to the final 5. As it is, he collected a check for the 3rd time this year at Atlanta Dragway. Pretty successful day in my opinion.

Maybe the #40 would have been fine back there? Ken, in your experience, how much does tweaking a carb setting like that net you?

Awesome Ken! The Sportsman class at Commerce is tough, no doubt. If you went four rounds you must have been cuttin' some sweet lights. I'll see you out there again on July 31.
