: 66 Chevelle... Should I paint rear panel or not?

I have read that either black or body color are both "correct", and I don't really care about that aspect anyway.

Just wondering if the majority of people think the center rear panel would look better painted the correct semi gloss black, or should I leave it as-is?

Your opinions are welcome. :beers:

Great looking 66! I like the black center, it seems to make the emblems pop. Just an opinion though.
BTW, what color silver is that?

On that Chateua Slate Color, I think the Black Rear Panel would be a nice contrast... I am sure somebody with good photo shop ability can show you exactly how it will look

The grays really need the black accents to set them off. The difference is amazing.

As Mike stated, Chateau Slate Metalic. Very similar to a Cortez Silver. It was a fairly cloudy day, so it looks a little more grey than it actually is.

Thanks for the compliments!

I think I see a pattern developing in the opinions. :)

Black without question. I have black on my regal red. I think it makes the emblems stand out much more. Nice car.

Okay, I guess I'll go out of the lines here, but I like it the way it is.
Leave it Slate, the black looks cheap. Maybe it's right, but it looks wrong. :D

It looks great both ways, but I prefer it blacked out, it screams SS car to me.

Andy,
that 66 is beautiful. I have not seen it at any of the shows, but then again, my 66 hasn't been at any of the local shows so who am I to talk.

I painted the rear panel black on my marina blue car. It reminded me too much of a malibu without it. IMO more of a muscle car appearance with it. I would like to see that 66 in person sometime.

The only "show" I went to was the first weekend of the River Run in Anoka this past spring. I am always looking for other guys to talk to. Unfortunately, it may be next spring before it gets out again. Drop me a note anytime. :beers:

I vote paint it black. Painting mine black (67) is at the top of the list of things to do this winter.

Not the best picture quality, but here is my favorite angle to look at the car:

I think what Mike is refering too is that he was instrumental in me finding a nice car. Thanks again Mike! :beers:

IMO it is worth the money to pay someone more knowledgeable, or at least less emotionally involved than yourself, when looking for a car. Unless you are much more seasoned at buying muscle cars than I am.

Thank you everyone that gave your opinions and nice comments! :)

I was leaning towards painting it, and I guess I'm leaning a little farther now.

Thanks. I have to agree as well on the extensions. My car is not an SS, although I have the SS grill, getting the SS extensions on my winter list.

Just got back from out of town.

Kelly, thanks for the photoshop. That really gives me an idea what it would look like.

Mike, how exactly should the extensions be blacked out? Can I modify mine, or do I need new ones?

No, you have the right ones.. Malibu and SS are the same in design, just need to paint them for SS...

email me and I will explain.. basically you want the extensions to match your Grill.. ie., one chrome strip on top and one on the bottom, everything in the middle Black!.. paint should match the sheen on your Grill and REAR PANEL!

On a '66 SS396 I would normally say to leave it body-color. With Chateau Slate I have to say that black on the rear panel really adds to the look, giving depth and detail, plus a nice contrast. You've gotta go black in this case.

Now if it were a '66 Canadian Malibu SS I would insist on an argent silver rear cove...

Your car looks really nice BTW.

Black would look cool ,but perhaps you could use a stick on something in case you get tired of it.
