: Car/Combo Thoughts
pat2k8 Jun 13th, 04, 2:38 PM Hi guys, I've been sitting on the side lines reading posts for about a year now! Thought i would let people laugh at my combo! Thoughts ideas and suggestions. I am a family man with very little extra income. Parts in canada are 2 to 3 times the cost also!
70' Nova 4 door
396 2 bolt main
10.25 stock cast pistons
3/8" rods
Performer RPM intake
closed chamber oval port heads, gasket matched and casting flash removed.
*unknown cam* around 220's @ .050 approx 480 lift with stock valve springs.
Holley 3310 carb
HEI distributor
Hooker Headers, 2 1/2"duals with Dynomax mufflers
car has a 3.08 gear no posi w/traction bars, 26" tall BFG street tire
TH 350 tranny, stock converter
no sway bar and small block springs, shocks.
car ran 13.95 @ 99mph , 3600lbs with mee in it. Before I put on traction bars. 2.4 60'
I want to do a cam swap maybe, CCA-11-217-4. I love a solid cam. Car only gets driven on weekends, local.
Rmchevelle Jun 13th, 04, 8:14 PM Cool car. Sleeper! I'm not sure what Comp cam that is but I think you should try the Magnum 270 solid.

pat2k8 Jun 13th, 04, 8:25 PM Just double checked, that is the exact cam I had picked out!!
How much CFM do I pick up for milling the choke horn off?
I'm looking at 3" exhaust too. I have dynomax 2 1/2" mufflers now, will run 3" to them.
Mainly doing things that are cheap, or can be done at work ;)
Rmchevelle Jun 13th, 04, 8:50 PM BTW, that's a great E.T. and I see you have lots of room for improvement with the 2.4 60'. I'd love to see what your new times would be with a decent 60'.
Cheap? Carb and timing!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Bomber '67 Jun 14th, 04, 1:08 AM Since you are on a budget the first thing I'm going to suggest is that the engine is just fine for right now.
What you "need" for quicker e.t.'s is better launches.
For little money you can install a PowerTrax Locker to make your peg-leg into a posi. Next up is tires, get drag radials at least - or a set of E.T. Streets for the track. The posi and tire upgrade will force you to tune your suspension, perhaps some Cal-Tracs or similar to control leaf spring windup. With all of the above in place, making a converter change will reap huge rewards. I see no reason why these changes wouldn't turn your car into a high 12 second car - with no engine changes!
Save your money on the 3" exhaust, not really needed for your engine set up.
Oh yeah, the 3.08 gears work in your favor since your engine setup is very biased toward the low end. With a smaller engine (406) that was a grunter, shifting at ~ 4,200 rpm my old Bomber ran very low 13.10's with 3.08's and regular street radials. You have more torque to play with - you just gotta harness it for as much off the line advantage as possible.
Good luck.

mr 4 speed Jun 14th, 04, 7:59 AM ..what Thomas said.A locker and sticky tires should get your 60 ft. down to the 2.0 or better 60 ft. and a quicker ET.
wes migletz Jun 14th, 04, 2:24 PM Pat, rather than milling off your airhorn, how about using a K&N Stub Stack over your aircleaner base?
pat2k8 Jun 14th, 04, 7:43 PM the reason for milling is.... I have access to a mill. No $$$$ spent!
427L88 Jun 15th, 04, 9:23 AM Don't think it'll be worth much. Hey, check out the new XS line of solids, XS268/XS274. Although these cams are 'small", the XE/XS line is pretty intense so break-in is critical. I;d use a dual spring like the Comp 924s and run ONLY OUTERS for the first hour of the new cams life.
