: My 71 Chevelle won't start

Went out to the garage today to fire up the 71, and unfortunately, nothing...My fault, I haven't started the car in 2 1/2 months, and went to crank it, and it just made two clicking noises. Once when I turned the key, and a second time when the key went back to the on position.

I tried jump starting the car, but that did nothing, then put a volt meter on the battery, it said it has 12.5 volts. However that was not under a load so I am not sure. The car ran like a champ last time I started it, and never have had any starter issues before, so I am kind of stumped. I am assuming that the solenoid is fine, since it is clicking, and there is nothing wrong with the wiring. I even tried hitting the starter lightly with a hammer, in case there was a dead spot or something. Kind of at a loss, my gut says the battery is shot, since i haven't started the car in 2 1/2 months, but when I put the volt meter on it and got 12.5 volts, I was really stumped. Any help that you can shed on this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Shawn

Have someone turn the key when you check voltage. If it's under 10 volts you need to charge the battery or replace it.

trickle charge it, see what percent it is charged. if it goes from 50% to 100% in less than 5 minutes the battery is toast. Also check for the sides of the battery to be buldging out. Good sign that should has cracked inside.

Thanks for the tips. The battery was shot. I was able to put the voltmeter on it, when the key was turned and the volts dropped from 12.5 to 8. I went out and bought a new battery and just put it in, started up like a champ. Thanks again
