: Any paint industry experts?

I am in the process of sanding down my car and will prime with SPI products. My plan is to turn the car over to a painter when I'm done. My father-in-law has a connection to the PPG Aircraft division who offered him any paint on their chart free of charge. It's their Desothane series (low VOC) and I am concerned as to whether or not this is able to be used on a car. I don't think I would have a problem applying PPG automotive topcoat over my SPI primer, but I don't know about this stuff. I will try to get a tech sheet on it, but figured I'd ask here first to see if anyone has knowledge on the subject.
My gut tells me that it'd be a shame to go this far with the body only to roll the dice on the topcoat, but for all I know there may be little difference.
Thanks!
Tom

It's probably a urethane like Imron 5000. If it is, it's only available in solid colors, no metallics. As far as durability, if it stands up to temperature changes that an airplane goes through with the altitude changes, and will go 550 MPH, I think it would do well on a car. The price is right, tho...

Thanks for your input, Dave. This chart has both solids and metallics (very nice ones too!)
I had the same thoughts about its durability, etc. My only concern is how it will bond to the SPI primer. My have to call Barry on Monday!

Untill you try it you will never know if it will work or not...I spray DuPont for a living and I personally think that mixing different paints (manufacturers) is definately asking for trouble. The manufacturers spend years scientifically formulating their products to work as a system that will provide a long lasting finish... DON'T DO IT....

Just spoke to PPG, and as expected they won't guarantee anything unless you use their primers, etc. and although their website lists the Desothane on a web page with the heading PPG Automotive at the top, it's definitely a different product than their auto top coats.
Unfortunately I'm going to have to pass on what would have been a very valuable favor. I just can't take the chance.
Thanks for the replies.
