a typical " Glass pack " muffler is a straight through core with drilled holes , stabbed holes , slices or slits on this inner core. These holes allow sound waves to reach the packing material.Sound waves generally are of 3 basic types.High end waves , mid range waves and low end waves ( Very brief discription here )..... Low end sound waves are long waves with little amplitude , High end waves are short sound waves with high amplitudes and mids are between the two.
Since the straight through type glass pack easilly allows low and mid range sound waves to pass through them , a typical glass pack will tend to absorb high end sound waves in that packing material. If you had say an 18 in Glass pack it would simply be loud as it's really too short to cancle enough of any sound waves... But if you had say a 36 or 40 in glass pack it would cancle much more high end sound waves and allow the mids and lows to go through.....A fresh long length glass pack system ,especially in a lower compression engine will useually produce a deep tone. That deep tone is made up of mostly low and mid range sound waves.I'm talking about good quality fully packed glass pack mufflers and not the cheap packs with very little packing in them.
How this interacts with flowmasters ? I cant honestly say.... could depend on wether the glasspacks were before or after the flowmasters. But either way they would help cancle certin sound waves.
