I don't think you could buy an Elky with an SS dash and not be an SS? So everything is original? Does it atleast have the domed hood?

sure you could. no different than a chevelle.

no way to know if it's rare, no statistics were kept for this sort of thing. Different, yes.

To clarify, if the dash has the round gauge dash and is not an SS it should have the gauges and not idiot lights. The only dash with the U14 Gauge option was the round gauges dash. If the instrumentation is idiot lights it is probably not original. The car should have 400 emblems instead of a 396 also. Probably not a lot of them floating around. I would guess not a bunch produced and also it would have been an easy vehicle to add the rest of the SS stuff to.

EDIT: In following up a question asked via PM, in following up www.Malibu400.com mentions that 72 would not have a decal.

PS Folks if you have a question that pertains to a discussion about a forum topic, please ask them in the thread so the info doesn't end up getting missed.

You mean that if it is not an original SS, but has the U14 option, it should have the idiot lights, not gauges. The gauges were SS specific.

NO. Gauges were not SS Specific. The idiot lights would be standard on an SS. Gauges were not an SS only option in Chevelles.

is there a "U" in the VIN?? that would determine if it had that engine originally.

So ... is it similar to a "Heavy Chevy" in an ElCamino?

No its not like a Heavy Chevy. A 400 El Camino is nothing more than a 402 big block in a non SS Custom El Camino. As for the dash a rally dash was available as on option on any chevelle or el camino as it was also available on a GMC Sprint. THe rally dash is no different than ordering bucket seats, it was just an option. Remember El Caminos were thought of as trucks, if you wanted to tow something you might want a big block but not worried about things like cowl hood stripes etc, it wasn't necessarily about high performance.

Scott, you have been asked some questions but haven't seen any answers, such as The letter U in the VIN, is it a domed hood? The answers to these questions will help answer your original question of how rare.

It's very rare because someone hasn't cloned it into an SS El Camino yet!

Very rare indeed, my friend bought an very original 72 Chevelle with the gauge option. It didn't have the idiot lights.

I got a friend who has an original 70 Malibu convertible with a 350 2-barrel, 4-speed and it has the original factory gauge set with the 5000 redline tachometer. Has the build sheet to prove it all as well. Has a 3.36 10-bolt positraction as well.

A coworker inherited a 72 ElCamino, 402 BB with the U14 gauge option no domed hood. His dad bought new.

The only way to get the round idiot light dash was in an SS. The U14 gauge dash was available in any V8 Chevelle or ElCamino. I believe that's what Jeff stated.
