I might be the only one, but I think these cars are so ugly. Glad someone likes them enough to take care of the rare ones but I wouldn't take it home for free:D

Still made 380 Ft. Lbs. of torque, though, and that is what moves the car. I love the 73-77's.

I love it! For some reason, I've always liked '73s. Not big on 74-77, but 73s are cool!

over all, i don't like that year much, but i have to say, one little thing can make them look great, and i've seen a few. i guess somebody makes a kit, or there is info somewhere to bring in those bumpers, and it totally changes the look of those rides. in socal, they are a model that has never taken off, and i see really clean ones for 4k and less. if i can ever figure out how the pull those bumpers back to where they belong, i might have one some day....

I'm just curious but what were the 71 & 72 454's HP rated at? I know they changed the way the rated them around that time. Anyway you put a good cam, heads and intake on there it it would be a fun car to drive :).

1BLACKHARLEY you can cut the bumpers down and remove all the bracing behind them very easily. I did the one on my 76 Laguna a couple of months ago and it only took a couple of weekends. But nobody makes a kit to do it as far as I know.

And even with all the bracing removed they will still absorb an impact-this pic is after I had some girl slide into me from behind.

If you look on either side of the license plate you can see two white marks where it scraped the paint off ( glad I didn't pay to have it re-chromed now )-pretty much crushed the whole front of her 08 Cobalt.
And just for the record I also have a 70 Chevelle but then I like all the older Chevelles, and if I had the money I would have one of each year up to 77 at least.

What Dave said...comparing horsepower numbers is useless...a stock 1973 454 can run 13's with headers, intake and a 3310 carb..with no more than 3.07 gears.A cam and a little more gear it will be in the 12's
There is no internal difference between a 71,72 or 73 454 other than the 73 having great flowing 049 heads.

Cool! Looks great, glad it passed the crash test as well! I had a fire truck en route hook on my front bumper on my old '76 and drag me about 10 feet - the overhang did not help me there.

Thanks for info mr 4 speed I know comparing numbers is kind of useless I was just interested in what the factory rating was for the earlier years. There was another post on here awhile back about the 73-77 Chevelles and in it I posted a pic of a guy on another forum I visit who has a 73 ( I think -can't remember off hand ) that runs mid 10's and has the front wheels up so, your right they can be made to run good and you can still get them fairly cheap which leaves more money to spend on the engine :).
72 malibu that must have been some ride ( getting hooked on the fire truck ) -YIKES - your right on the overhang that's why when you move these bumpers in they also need to have the width narrowed- I moved mine forward 3 in. and narowed it 3 in. ( 1 1/2 per side ) It's kind of hard to see in those pics but if you look at the last one with the scrape marks you can see where I also angled the bottom of the bumper in so it wasn't flat all the way down like the factory made it.
But back on topic that is a very sharp lookin 73 although the color is not one I would go for that can always be changed thanks to the original poster for sharing.

Bought a '73 SS like this one in 1973; light copper metallic but with a black vinyl roof, black interior. (The vinyl roof tones down the copper color and makes for a nice combination.) It was one of the nicest cars I have owned; so a few years ago, I bought another one, but dark red metallic and auto. These cars are head turners, in a positive way; a lot of thumbs up . If you can pick one up for a reasonable price, go for it. This one looks in good shape, would be a good buy at $6K-14k; have seen them priced at $25k and more depending on the condition and mileage. Just make sure it's not a clone.:)
