OK,

I added some additional suspension goodies last night that mandate removal of my Dynomax 6" round "Welded Ultraflows". I really liked those mufflers... I have Dynomax headers and a 3" system with a Dr. Gas X-pipe and need to find something that's no larger then about 4" as the exhaust will have to exit out after the x-pipe and before the rear tires...

I am considering buying a 4" turndown that's 16" long and trying Car Chemistries "CC-Inserts" that would be riveted or tack welded in the straight section before the turndown. They make 2 or 3 disk inserts depending on how much sound reduction you want. They also make an insert that is flanged that goes right into the 3" collectors, but I feel this may mess with the proper function of the X-pipe??? Do these inserts work? I'm worried about restriction and sound control.

I could try to fit in something like a Borla Sportsman that's 4 1/2" tall by 7 7/8 wide or a Dynomax oval case Ultra Flow thats 4 1/2 x 9 3/4"... Both would be 3" in/out. This may too tight and not provide enough ground clearance.

Any thoughts on the CC Inserts or compact mufflers that will flow enough to support 650 HP and still cut down the noise enough that the police don't pull me over?

Summit is also advertizing some straight tube mufflers from Stainless Works that are 3" in/out and only 3 1/2" OD. They are available in long smooth (24" long) or louder chambered (30" long) configurations... This is a possible option???

Just wanted to mention these as they would fit nicely with turndowns exiting just in front of the rear tires...

If you're going to use the CC inserts, I'd install them into something removeable and then put them at the very end of the exhaust-at the tailpipe exit. That way you could remove them for racing or at the track.
I tried these (2 disc without plugs) in the header collector of my 355" SBC Super Gas car. They killed it DEAD. It would barely accelerate. I couldn't tell you how much it lost cause the motor was so down on power, I let off for fear of hurting it. I then went back to the pits and threw them away.

Randy,

Thanks for the feedback....

I was worried that the CC-Inserts would be too restrictive based on their design. I don't want to have to change/modify the exhaust at the track so it sounds like I'd be best to run the the oval shaped Borla Sportsman or Dynomax Ultra flows as they are 4 1/2" thick and I should be able to sneak them in with small turndowns just after the X-pipe and before my ladder bar crossmember...

I also ran them on my ProCharged 468. They had so much backpressure I bent the baffles when I went full throttle.

Good thing: they do quiet the car and lessen resonance.

Bad thing: they kill the power.

I don't know how they sell these things honestly. They claim no power loss, but that must just be for a VERY low HP vehicle.I actually called them first and spoke at length to them about what I had and what I was trying to do.
