: I don't get it...........
quikss Oct 6th, 08, 8:25 PM My wife and I spent the weekend in Chicago at the National Electrical Contractors Association tradeshow. We had an outstanding time, and met a lot of great people all related to my electrical field.
What I don't understand though, is why would an Amish couple be at an electrical trade show? I got quite the chuckle out of it to be honest. I figured that was the last place I would ever find an Amish couple. I was going to take a picture with my cell phone, but I figured that would be really inappropriate, but it was funny to me.
By the way, for those that live in big cities, is it common to have a Dunkin Donuts on every single block of the downtown, or is that just Chicago that does that? I have never in my life seen more Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and Subways, all totalled up as I saw in downtown Chicago this weekend.
We saw a couple nice Ferraris rolling through (remember I am from a town of 12,000 we see Ferraris, but not several per day) and loads of Bentleys. Boy is there money in Downtown Chicago.
Great weekend though

PCB67SS Oct 6th, 08, 8:31 PM The Amish Back in PA. used electricity....Just not off the grid. They had there own generators and power tools. Plus I believe the Mennonites use Electric as well but im not sure.
Andy69 Oct 6th, 08, 8:34 PM There are various Amish sects. Not all of them are as strict as what we think of when we hear the word Amish.
There are Amish who drive cars, and there are Amish who use electricity.

JWagner Oct 6th, 08, 9:11 PM Just saw an article this week about how some Amish are going to photovoltaic panels because of the cost of petroleum based energy. Apparently they feel that solar is more a natural product.
spdracer256 Oct 6th, 08, 10:20 PM I saw on HG TV that the amish are making a big splash in the contracting world. It seems that a lot of people are using them to frame their homes. TV said that the house they were featuring was framed in half the time and at 1/2 the cost (with probably 2x the craftsmanship) maybe they are branching into actually finishing homes that they frame.

Chris R Oct 7th, 08, 1:08 AM I spent a weekend in downtown Chicago back in June and didnt really see any exotics. Weekend was certainly the perfect one for that stuff to be out though. Chicago is a really nice city.

Other than the Bentleys, we didn't see much for exotics on the weekend, come Monday morning though when we went walking around the financial district, their were exotics all over. Some very nice cars in that area.

ChaosEnvy Oct 7th, 08, 11:51 AM I go to Chicago Several times a year. Downtown, is a mess and if I had an exotic I sure wouldn't be driving it downtown. Too many cabs, horns blaring, people walking to worry about an expensive car gettting tore up. As for Dunkin Donuts, there are a lot of them them more north you go in Illinois, start heading south and the dissapear. Not a single one around where I am. In Chicago though, they are all over, may be Primarily donuts, but they sell all kinds of stuff. There coffee stands up to Starbucks. Little south of Chicago you will see Dunkin Donut Drive-Thrus. Yea, lots of starbucks and subway, but there are a ton of other places to eat and drink downtown.
We all went down to Chicago earlier in the year and went to the Sciene and industry museum, there were several amish people there. They may not use electricity, but they may be fascinated to learn what is out there.
I'm not amish, but I wouldn't mind learning how they construct things out of wood without nails that stand up better than modern construction.

69badboy Oct 7th, 08, 11:57 AM The Amish build campers too. I purchased an A.R.E. brand topper back in the mid 90's made by them I was told by the dealer. I know one thing it was very high quality.
PaPa Johns 77 Oct 7th, 08, 12:30 PM Were they there because of the Amish built heaters that have been being advertised on TV lately?
They build the wooden cabinets for them and an outside company suppies the electric heater parts.:)
