I bought my car not having ever actually sat in one (70 Malibu). I'm not really a small guy, I figure mabe a little bigger than average 6'1" about 230# or so. Mocking up some seats today, With the rails of the seats directly on the floor (about 6.5-7 inches from the floor to the top of the seat bottom) and when I sit in the seat in a comfortable position, My head is about 3/4 of an inch from hitting the headliner crossbars... My car didn't come with a factory front seat, so I don't have anything to go off of, but I'm pretty sure it was more than 7 inches tall... These seats are about as low as I can make them, They are power seats, and there's not really any way to make them shorter... I was thinking about dropping the rails into the floor about an inch or so... Anyone done anything similar?
Anyway, How much headroom do you actually have when you are sitting in a driving position? How tall at your seats from floor to the top of the bottom cushion?
Thanks

Steve:
I'm about the same height and when my factory buckets were redone my hair was touching the headliner. I almost freaked the first time I took it out after getting the new seats in!
In my case, since I had factory seats, I removed the factory bumpers that the seat back rests on when it folds back and forth. I made up my own thinner ones to allow the back to recline about 1.5" more. It's a much more comfortable position and my head now has room.
In your case you've got the additional challenge of non-stock seats, but perhaps reclining them a touch is all you need. As for setting them into the floor I'm not sure exactly what you're implying but I don't think I'd recommend cutting slots in the floor to enable the rails to pass through if that's your angle. I'm no expert but I'd think possibly modifying your seat frames is the way to go here if you simply can't get enough clearance otherwise.
Try getting in touch with Jeff (username 70goldnugget)...he's the master! ;)

My father(6'4 300#) has the same problem with my 70 model, however he refuses to recline the seat more then it is. talked to him about it, he then stated we should just jack it to the sky and throw the biggest rims we could find on it if he had to lay back his seat. :D

Do you have the factory seats? would you do me a favor and measure them from the floor to the top of the bottom of the seat? I guess I'm looking for something to compare the seats I'm trying to use to what came stock.
