Hello
What I have is a 1965 malibu. I have read this link on troubleshooting and am in the process, but needhelp.
http://www.chevelles.com/forums/show...ing+alternator (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/show...ing+alternator)
I found a Delco Remy module. I believe it is a regulator. I opened the cover and it has a relay inside. I cannot get the coil to pull in the relay.
It does not look like the regulators that I see in catalogs or online. I am going back out to make a wiring diagram with the battery, alternator and this (regulator ?) circuit. I hope for a reply for when I finish to give more information

....and your question is ?

I feel like an idiot. From the beginning. My battery is not charging so I looked to the forum for troubleshooting tips.
I now have a new battery because I could not get a good charge out of the old. I next looked for a regulator but dont believe I have one because I have a plug in place of where the regulator should be. The plud jumps terminal 1to4 and 2to3 with #2 connected to a post where the Alternator charging wire comes from.
I disconnected the battery while the car was running and the car stalled.
I reconnected the battery and disconnected the charging wire from the alternator, started the car and tested that post. I was reading 13 volts at 1000 rpm. at this point I figure the alternator is good. This is where I am at now. I have an electric fuel pump, electric Vacuum pump and the msd that I cannot disconnect to see if one of them are NG. I pulled out all the fuses except the ones that run those components to see if there was any type of high resistance ground. found nothing. Could the Alt still put out 13 volts under no load but still be bad when a load is put on it?

Donnie,
I think you really need to have someone who is familiar with these electrical systems have a look to see what your eally have. If you really do not have a regulator, it is possible that someone has replaced the alternator with either a new style internal regulator alternator, or one of the "hot rod" one wire units. SOme pictures would help, but it is a lot easier to actually look at the car to see what is going on.
By the way, disconnecting things while the car is running and the ignition is on, is the best way to burn up an alternator or regulator, or both. Dont do it no matter what you hear from others.

Bill K , thank you . I was about to say do not disconect battery while running as it can do as you said ruin the reg or or alt. may get lucky one or two times but It will get you sooner or later and the cost is $$$$$
