Did anyone else see the episode that included an aftermarket big block chevy that could go all the way out to 1,000 cu.in? They said you could use stock bb parts, but by the way that camshaft looked i'd say no way. Who was the manufacturer of that block and heads? I couldn't believe the size of that motor. Brad.

NO!!!

I think he is serious b/c sometimes I feel the same way!!!

Something about using parts made out of that "ever-so-special", EXPENSIVE material, "Poor-boy Unobtainium" just turns me off too....

Yeah... Great show if you really want to be teased... Who in the "real world" can afford all that!

Wasn't Hot Rodding a term attached to people making things Bigger Better & Faster using whatever we could get our hands on and making it work together ? Hmmm.... Times change, I guess it's all just about the almighty $$$$ now.

I agree, watching them bolt on the trick of the week parts is pretty hard to swallow. But they do get to build some pretty cool cars. The funny thing is every time they put one of there cars on the track, it never runs anywhere near the times you think that it should. If you are interested in a show I think they have a web site that talks about the shows.

If it's a car show i'm going to watch it.But it does get a little depressing when a guy like me who's working by himself to restore a chevelle he's had since a kid, watch's "overhaulin"
and they redo a 56 chevy belair in an
unheard of 7 days.

Like that LS1 Camaro they keep DUMPING money into and get an extra 50 or so HP. Geesh, for the several THOUSANDS of dollars they dumped on it for 50hp, just install a nitrous kit. A 50hp kit is pretty tame for a stock LS1 to handle.

I think you might be talking about "HorsePower TV" instead of HotRod TV. But at any rate, these shows are ONLY on to advertise a vendor's product. NO other reason. Sometimes you can pick up on a way to 'help' your own car, by scrounging used parts. Now there's an idea for a show, The Pick A Part supercar of the week. Dyno a 'normal' car, add available used parts then dyno again...... There is also the "bucks up" portion of our hobby that will go to a shop and say, "I want what I saw on TV".

I personally wish all the magazines, or hell at least one of them would have a section called "Real Rod" or somthing to that extent. This section would be dedicated to show people how to "cobble" stuff together cheap and make it extremely functional. For instance like my 3" exaust im putting together using a cut, bend and weld, method and it isnt looking too bad either. So instead of a 4-500 dollar exaust system im going to have 50 bucks in pipe, and 100 dollars in mufflers.
They could show a few cars that people actually did there own work to, drive to the track and back and arent perfect, but well crafted. I would rather read that over all the high dollar 20" rims, turbo chargers, EFI and all that stuff that i cant afford.
Hey Freiburger if you read this, wich i doubt you will, how bout it buddy. A section of Hot Rod dedicated to cars that are real, not to half million dollar "Trepanier" rad rides.

I'm serious as a heart attack!!

I get upset and then flip the channel when I watch stuff like that!!

AS an EXAMPLE...

Sure OCC can build a good custom Hog-Bike but give me a break b/c I bet before the old man's head got so big he can hardly walk through the door of the Shop b/c of becoming a TV Star, his bikes weren't near THAT HIGH PRICED!!!

It's called "CONVINCING"!!

"Convincing" somebody to allow you to make more money off stuff then it's actually worth...

So you can make $150,000 to $3,000,000 a year OR more off what you get from your customers!!

Unfortunatley a junkyard special show will never happen. It takes money to make TV shows and without sponsors there is no money. I think the biggest problem is the learning curve. The learning curve to build your own exhaust system is quite abit steeper then just having someone install it. Nickel333 how many hours do you have under the car working on the exhaust? Convert that into hours you would have spent working. Now for most of us here we would gladly spend the time a car learning how to do it. And not only just doing it but other skills needed like welding and bending. Can you show that on a show? Not really. For example I started building fiberglass speaker boxes. My first door pod took about 30 hours. Had I gone to work for 3 hours I could have just bought some Q-logic panels. But I learned a ton of stuff in that 30 hours.

Now if you guys really want a junkyard special show. I will videotape my experience at trying to get an aluminum radiator from a 1991 Buick Riviera into my 86 Cutlass. Hey I only paid 20$ for the rad. :D

I'm going to have close to 200 hours in my headers and exhaust by the time I'm finished. And a little more than $800 too.

Remember what started it all..."Shade Tree Mechanic". That was a great show, most of the time they were showing you how to do jobs corretly. They went step by step when degreeing a cam or installing a distributor, I learned a ton from that show. Its a shame it was bumped for more freakin advertising.

I think they could do a junkyard build special, but the carb, intake, headers, etc. would be from sponsors.Run a dyno test too, even they used a stock 350,and stabbed in a cam from Comp,Edelbrock Airgap, etc.A junkyard flat top 454 would be cool too. You get the picture :D

Hold on a second...forgive me if im wrong...but isnt 2 guys garage the one where they have the "ordinary everyday shop" . Thats what they refer to the garage as right? Well my ordinary everyday shop dosent have a chassis dyno and a checkered black floor!!!!

Wannarace...The hours i have in my exaust are probably totaling around 4 or 5 and im about 3/4 the way done. Its somthing thats just not difficult if you dont need a 100 point show piece when your done. The hard part is the eyeballing based on the lack of a constant measuring opint. But i just take a little at a time out and work it into place, make tacks under the car, pull the system out, weld and grind.
Knudsonm...How do you have 200 hours in an exaust man???? For as much as youve already spent you could have bought a great exaust system!!!

Nobody makes long tube big block headers for an s-10. I had to get the headers by ed kit and start cutting and welding. The 1 3/4" kit was $526 the 3" Dynomax S/S UltraFlo's were $117 a pieces the 4' peice of 3" tube was $14 and the turndowns were $20. plus about 3 pounds of welding wire LOL

Check this out. What about a TV show called "Single Car Drive-way"? Episodes include, "How to convince your wife that the family's survival depends on that Barry Grant Mighty Demon 750 carb you saw in the Summit magazine. Or, a whole episode dedicated to finding that damn 1/2" wrench (possible locations). graemlins/beers.gif

i think a show like 'real rod' would be awesome... feature real guys with real cars with low-buck mods that go fast. that would definitely be a show worth watching!
