Hey guys I was told about a 70 ss today. Its supposed to be a 454 car but now has a 402 in it. It has bucket seats and console, auto, 12 bolt rear. thats about all I know. He's asking $7,000 but he said he'll take $6,000. I'll possibly get some pictures tomorrow. Sound like a good deal? Supposedly has minimal rust.

Thanks

6K is a very low price for an SS, I wouldn't expect much if it is a true SS. It may very well be a clone. Pictures would be great, the more the better. Lots of support here to look at the pics and help you out.

Lloyd, maybe you can find someone that is familiar with the 70 SS to go with you and check it out.

If not, do as Steve suggested. Get lots of pics.

well I'm decent on the 70 chevelles and thought that sounded like an awfully low price for one but the weak market threw me off. A friend of mine went to look at the car and told me he wasn't interested and told me where it was. Its a good hour drive to the car so I'm going to get pictures from my friend who looked at the car first before I personally go look at the car. I asked him if there was any docs for the car and he didn't ask and the seller didn't mention any so I doubt there is any unless its still hidden in the car somewhere. It also has no a/c. who knows, either the seller doesn't know what they're talking about when they say its a 454 car with a 402 in it or it could be a numbers matching 402!!!!!!

I'll find out in a few days and let you guys know!

Thanks,
Lloyd

well I looked at pictures and it was all apart. it had no front bumper, the grill was out but he did have it, It had a cowl induction hood not just the bump hood, and it appears to be originally cranberry red with white stripes. It comes with 2 extra 454's out of trucks that ran when they were pulled as long as another turbo 400. the motor in the car is a 402 with a turbo 400. I'm thinking its definitely worth going to look at. I'll keep you updated.

Thanks

well...............Its my new project!! I'm going to go get it this weekend. I ended up giving him some guns and 4 grand. I gave $1,000 for the guns so I'll be in a 70 ss for $5,000!!!!! Even though its not a survivor I'll definitely be taking pictures of it in its current condition before I touch it!! I'll get it saturday or sunday.:D

Thanks

From the few pics I saw before purchasing its that real deep red. I thought it was called cranberry red but after looking I think its that rose met. color. My plans are restoring it back to its original condition and probably not a frame off but I'm not sure yet.

well I picked it up today! It is going to take a lot of work. :D The motor fired right up! Its got a 402 in the car and came with two extra 454's. I went to look at the cowl tag and its gone. why do people do these kind of things?? Its is a 454 car. There is a sticker on the top of the radiator that says 454, 4 bbl. It also say gm 105 underneath that if that means anything. the original bucket seats are gone. the back seat was there and in good condition. It has a 5500 redline tachometer. does that possibly mean an ls5? Its going to need a trunk pan but the floors are real good. Here are the pictures.

Over all its a pretty good starting point. As far as I can tell it was originally rose met. with white stripes, black vinyl top and black interior with a maroon carpet. I'm trying to picture in my head but I'm not having to much luck. anyone have a picture of one done that way?? so what do you guys think? should I send it to the crusher?:p:p

Not, bad...the color is called Black Cherry. That is a beautiful color for a Chevelle with white interior. Check the vin number if the 7 digit is a "1" you then have a Canadian built car.

The vin number is 136370k162294. so I'm guessing the k is for kansas?

yeah!! I've seen alot worse though. really the only actual rust is in the trunk, a small spot on the passengers fender, and possibly the passengers quarter panel. everything else is just surface rust. and even at that none of is is real bad. but yeah i have heard rust free several times and get there and there not be a piece of metal thats good on it cause of all the rust!

Hi LLoyd,
From your picture posted of the radiator hold down top plate with emissions sticker, look at the bottom of the sticker. I bet you'll find it has wording something like " This vehicle conforms to U.S. dept of H E W and california regulations applicable to 1971-? model year motor vehicles " . This type -size decal was introduced in 1971 and was used throughout the 70's like this. 1970 decals are much thinner than yours. The plate is also not a 70 evidenced by the U shaped indents near the mounting holes.
Regardless, looks like you indeed got a nice start for a project at a good price.
I'd definately try and question the seller about the trim tag, possibly whoever he bought it from may still have it if he doesn't?
Good luck, Chris

That chart covers, Buick, Chevy, Pontiac & Oldsmobile. That's why the difference in names. Rose metallic must have been one of the other mfg'ers. For a Chevelle, the color is Black Cherry, as far as I know.

LLoyd,
1970 Chevelles painted the color your car appears to be were code 78 which your paint chart calls maroon metallic. Chevrolet's sales name for this code in their sales literature call it black cherry. If your car still had it's trim tag this question could be easily answered. The only way it could have been painted the rose metallic color you're thinking it is would have been by special order again denoted by a code on the trim tag.
Hopefully you can find it.
