This is on a personal level. Refinanced my house 60 days ago. Had a credit rating of 742. A few days ago applied for a home equity line, which was approved. Got a phone call today from the bank telling me I have a lien on my house for taxes my wife owes in the sum of $8000, which she hasn't worked since 95. They also said my wife owes a $7500 hospital bill for some guy by the name of Ralph. None of this is true. They have pulled someone else up as the same name of hers. Now, my question is how do I go about cleaning this mess up? Our credit is top notch. And the bank is destroying it. Anybody out there work in this field? Or has anyone ever had this happen to them?

I'm not your expert, but I've been there. Since you have been turned down, you are entitled by law a free copy of the credit report they used to turn you down. From there on you will need to get the credit reporting companys (three of them) to check the facts you give them. Some one screwed up and you get the grief! LOL

So by law they have to give a copy? Thats good.
They at 1st said they turned me down but called back in a few hours and said i was ok and will still get the line of credit but had to sign a paper saying this was'nt our debts.Thats beside the point because of some dumb ass it now will show up on my cerdit report.STUPID.Just becuase someone eles has the same name as you {IT'S YOU}
It's like you are guilty before you go to court.
You would think the dumb ass would make sure it's your s.s number.Thanks for your in-put.

My wife and I spent the entire day day at the credit bureau getting a mess fixed. there was a couple that also lives in the kansas city area with the same names as ours. we found this out when we applyed for our first home loan. all of there stuff was on ours and vice versa. Thank god there credit wasn't bad, but it took a whole day there to get things separated out.

Not really any help but alot of it comes down to not the name but the SSN. I once was getting a cell phone for me and my girlfriend and I was one digit off with her SSN and they told me she was DECEASED! Whoever's name shows up on your credit report probably has a similar SSN or outright stole yours.
Also, I believe that Bush just signed a law that says you can request one free copy of your credit report per year whether you apply for credit and get turned down or not. It's supposed to help combat identity fraud.
