Ok i remember there being an post about this but couldnt find it. I have been reading alot about UDharolds cams and think thats what im going with.

I know that gene has one in his 427 and he has the square ports and i want mine to scream like that on the top end. Here are my particulars, see what you guys think.

461 w/11.1s ( i dont care if i need race gas) square port cc heads (fully p&p) cast crank,3/8 rods with wave lock bolts and main studs. Weiand stealth intake with 950 hp double pumper. T-400 with 4000 switch-pitch stall and 4.10s in back.

Right now it runs 12.04 @114.2 60ft 1.83 this is with an old cc 11-605-5 the only limit i have is valve lift of 675, so what do you guys think? thanks CHRIS

Chris, 10.5:1 is max'ed with the smaller 276/284 cam, you really need to step up to the 288/296 profile with 11:1 IMHO. Plus you've got 42 cubes on me. Both reasons to move up. Might get by on 93/94 octane and a VERY good timing curve. Chris 69SS has that combo. Rather quick , it is!

One detail, Harold explained how advancing the cam would help the charge velocity. That was the machine shops error, they had it in appox. 6 retarded. I put it back in 6 + advanced. I can't help but think that helped a bit. I'd do the same with yours.

QAK I went 11.20s at 120+ with your engine and a 4spd in a 55 Chev wagon. I don't know about your cam but some of the Comp smaller race cams work real well with your engine.

Try Comp cams street roller. 250/260 duration 660/666 lift. I uses one. And people told me i would lost torque down there. Bah!

685ft/lbs@4100rpm never saw a 454 do better.

So the cam works really good for me. Went 9.32 on a 300 shot of nitrous(2950lbs). 11.03/204.7 without nitrous in a 3600 car.

I never go hydralics again. Toatally waste of money. They dont even be close on power output.

if you want a smaller cam i used a 238SR crane streetroller before. Not to much difference in low power but little better MPG. Idle was the same.

If you don't care about race gas, why 11:1? Might as well go 12.5:1 and use race gas full time. If you want pump gas I'd keep compression to below 10.5:1 with iron heads --- 11:1 is a bad place to be IMO with iron heads (I run 93 octane and 11.2:1 with an aluminum head SBC which is just fine IMO).

The power an extra 1/2 point of compression makes isn't worth the hassel IMO. At 10.0-10.5:1 you will have a lot more cam choices too.

Just my opinion.

I run it with oval ports,10.5 compression (92 unleaded) 950HP carb, 3500 Stall, 4.10's and have gone low 11's at 120 (went 122 last time out). Great street manners and tone of fun to drive. Do a search for the entire combo.

Thanks for the replys guys!

Eric68 i run 11.1s because thats what my brother put in the motor when it was built, since then ive aquired it from him.

Maybe harold will get some time and chime in here and ill take into consideration what you guys have said and what he says too. Im a truck driver so i dont have much time in the day to call him. Thanks alot guys...keep em coming CHRIS

Ever hear that old addage, use a big cam with small heads and a small cam with big heads, when designing a combo?

I don't know if it's true , but it made sense to me.

Dang, wish you could run it on race gas and use the smaller one.
