: Valves
AB chev Aug 28th, 04, 2:18 PM Hi guys. My car currently has a dished piston 355 with 882's. I have a pair of bare 906 vortec heads that I want to install but I don't know what valves to buy. These heads are off a 96 pickup that had 49,000 miles on the clock. I took them apart about a year ago (valves/studs) and threw everything away. :( I plan on going with a solid cam so I will get them machined for screw in studs and guide boss cut for clearance. My question is if they will accept any after market valve of the same size, and if yes, can I install them without having to do anything to the seats?
Thanks,
Francisco
BillK Aug 28th, 04, 2:24 PM Francisco,
The stock Chevy valves are actually very good quality parts. The exhausts were designed to run on propane and stationary engines and will hold up to almost anything. If you want to upgrade the intakes, any decent street stainless 1.940" valve will work, even though the Vortech valves are slightely different lengths. I just went through a set of 350 Vortech heads for a boat. It had been having some problems running hot and tuliping the intake valves. I talked to the guys at SBI valves and they were the ones that told me to leave the exhaust alone and just upgrade the intakes if anything at all.
Hope this helps,
pdq67 Aug 28th, 04, 5:50 PM Bill,
Why all the different stock SM head valve lengths b/c I just bought some cheap stock replacement valves for my -601's and it supprised me the different lengths for what I thought were stock valves??
And I understand the need for longer valves in high-lift cam applications for being able to fit springs that can take the lift w/o coil binding, but the stock stuff?????

AB chev Aug 28th, 04, 6:03 PM Thank you for the quick reply Bill. Now I can move on to choosing a cam :D
AB chev Aug 28th, 04, 6:11 PM Ah, good thing I read your post pdq67. I forgot to ask about the length of the valve. Will the longer valve affect the rocker arm? I mean, Will the tip still sit right in the middle of the valve tip?

Frank Not very likely. You'll have to check. I'd lay money you'll need longer ones.

Wolfplace Aug 29th, 04, 3:45 PM AB,
I am sure Pat meant longer pushrods to get the geometry correct ;)
Some of us "age challenged" guys need our sleep or the mind starts to ,,,,, ummm, what was the question graemlins/clonk.gif :D
AB chev Aug 29th, 04, 3:54 PM Mike, thanks for the info. I ran my car at the track on Thursday and was very disapointed with my times. I have been having trouble going to sleep because so many combos/ideas/possibilities run through my mind. I finally go to sleep but wake up about an hour later thinking about trailing arms and slicks

Oh crap,,, sounds like you have the beginnings of "the sickness" :D
Don't be too dissapointed with the times, it's a start & everyone started somewhere.
Lot's of folks here that will try to help,,, just ask graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Enjoy ;)
AB chev Aug 29th, 04, 6:14 PM Thank you. So far I have found a lot of helpful information in the search section. It's an overall great site and the kind members actually care and respond with accurate & helpful information. Not to talk behind backs, but I have had horrible experiences in a popular 4x4 message board. My questions were always answered with offensive language and "throw it away and get a new one" or " your rig sucks" remarks
Thanks again! smile.gif

AB chev Aug 30th, 04, 12:46 AM Pat, we are neighbors(kinda). Your sig has 1/8th mile times. Most likely from Irwindale speedway. Am I right?
Pat Kelley Aug 30th, 04, 12:55 AM Yep, Irwindale. I figured that was where you ran Thursday night. Did they run the 16 car bracket?
