: A-pillar pod for 64-67
tunedbytad Sep 30th, 08, 9:42 PM Pro Touring cars should turn stop and go.
Well I can't turn stop and go and look at gauges that are mounted at knee level all at the same time.
Does anyone know if there is a guage pod avaiable for 67's?
Looking for 3x 2"1/16 pillar pod.
If not,
Would anyone be interested in making on for me/us?
pre paid Group purchase?
pist0lpete Oct 1st, 08, 12:48 AM I have been looking for the exact same thing! I have seen them for 68-72s but haven't been willing to buy one to see if it works.
stealth71 Oct 1st, 08, 8:00 AM I know it is functional, but aren't those for the ricers?
pist0lpete Oct 1st, 08, 11:18 AM I say yes and no for the ricer thing. I see more of them on diesel trucks than anything really. I would much rather have a nice set of aftermarket gauges custom mounted in the dash but that gets expensive. For now it would be nice to get the oil pressure and water temp at the very least up closer to eye level. It seems that an A Pilar pod IMO is the most sensible solution.
tunedbytad Oct 1st, 08, 11:41 AM Ricer spec is to install gauges sans aka without senders but hook up the lighting to impress ppl.
I have actually SAVED MY WHOLE CAR with a pillar pod.
My Impala shut off mid turn on track at the autocross.
Turnning with my left arm I went to crank with my right.
As I went for the key I saw !!ZERO!! fuel pressure.
Hit the brakes and jumped out witht he fire extinguisher.
Lucky for me I had 409 taylors. no ignition. VBG
My motor mount failed on track!
The engine wrap in the bay ripped my secondary fuel line right off the rail.
I was dumping around 510Liters per hour right on the driver side header if I put the key forward!
My shorties pipes run about 950F in traffic. I'm sure I was way positive of that on track.
Gauge pod from the outside

Gauge pod from the backseat.
3x in the pod 4x in the dash ring 1x Wideband in the ash tray was moved to the pod in place of the narrow band

I used to have nerviousness while driving about AFR, oil temp, trans pressure ,ect...
Maybe cause I drive on the dyno as much as I drive on the street.....
Or maybe it is all the time into the magic bulet 4l60e, or the custom built LT1 that I cant afford to replace.
But now I just take a brisk look across VDO land and I feel all better.
Ok now who wants to make A-pillar pods for early A-bodys???
vrooom3440 Oct 2nd, 08, 1:32 PM Shucks these things really are nothing fancy. Just a piece of vacuum formed plastic.
Hardest part is making up a dummy or form out of wood. Buy some cheap 1x4 pine and laminate pieces together into a block that provides the same thickness as the A pillar and length desired. Mark off on the ends the circular profile of the A pillar. Cut/carve off everything that does not look like gauge pod.
Pick up some 1/8" black ABS plastic. The cool stuff is smooth on one side and textured a bit on the other. May be hard to get just a small piece, they like to sell in 4x8' sheets, so you will have lots of extra in case you mess one or more up.
Then vacuum away. I have a custom heater fan duct in my El Camino that I fabricated this way. Looks and mounts like the stock metal non-AC duct except that the raised portion is only about half as long.
stealth71 Oct 2nd, 08, 1:55 PM I was just messing around.
Do they make a replacement you could mod to add the pods? I know finding them for a '71 is mostly impossible.
NPD does carry some small 1 and 2 gauge pods that you might be able to mod.

tunedbytad Oct 2nd, 08, 3:09 PM that 10052 Pillar pod will point right at the sky.
the pods need to be at a 90 degree angle to the a-pillar

I could try making the mold out of wood.
How about *edit* surfboard foam? *edit*
TAD
vrooom3440 Oct 2nd, 08, 5:40 PM Now I don't have *any* idea what "surdboard foam" is... so I ask Uncle Google and he responds 'Did you mean: surfboard foam'
Hmmmm... Tad *is* from 'Sunny SoCal' so maybe that *is* what he meant?
I would not use foam for vacuum forming plastic. One reason is the plastic is going to be around 200* when you slap it onto the mold and I have no confidence that foam is not going to melt at that temp. I also have doubts as to the rigidity of foam for this application.
Now if you want to go to the work of putting a fiberglass skin on the foam before using it as a mold, well that might work. Or another alternative skin would be sufficient paper mache'.
Now this might be a bit crude... but how about using a combination of masking tape and thin cardboard to mock up the whole thing up? You could actually tape/mount some gauges in place to insure the desired angles and clerances. Put cardboard bezels around them. Add a bit of tape and thin cardboard. Top off with paper mache' to final shape. Pull it off and the gauges out, add some backing for stiffness and mold away.
Or buy one of those 68-72 pillar pods and take wedges out until you get the angles right and use that as a mold base.
tunedbytad Oct 2nd, 08, 8:19 PM Doh~!
Yes I was talking about Surf Board Foam.
High Density Classic Foam you can not really dent by handeling it.
It takes tools to carve away at it.
Then I could make a mold by covering it in fiber glass.
But I dont know anything about making gauge pods.
I'm more interested in just buying one as I have a huge list of other porjects.
It may be possible to go to town with wood tools and 4"x4".
Would wood shrink or grow over time in the sun?
Is anyone interested in makeing these?
vrooom3440 Oct 3rd, 08, 3:02 PM Wood would have to be sealed otherwise it would shrink from sun-baking over time.
This is the sort of thing I would do on my own car just for the cool factor... but since I don't have an earlier car to use for fitting and way more projects of my own already I probably should not take on another :beers:
It would be way cooler than hanging gauges off of the bottom of the dash though.

All in favor say EYE!
cuisinartvette Oct 3rd, 08, 8:43 PM Aye! Eye! I.
Was thinking about this the other day. If they were subtle and didnt stick out real far I may be interested. THinking about not using the SS gauges as I do like seeing a needle swing to a number but dont want anything hanging off the dash anymore either.
Something to think about.
One with provisions for 2 gauges, one for 3?
tunedbytad Oct 4th, 08, 3:17 AM I'm really wanting a 3x 2 1/16 pillar pod
daveseitz Oct 4th, 08, 9:55 AM Look at PVC pipe, just keep cutting and forming untill it is a flush as you like. When done glue it all together and wrap with a thin foam and vinly or leather. I know a guy who built some that way with aluminum tube, tack welded and black leather wraped. It is truly 1 of a kind and looks nearly factory after wrapping the a pillar.
