: BBC 396 intake question
husky100 Sep 29th, 08, 1:29 PM I am helping my parents complete their 67 138 code Chevelle. Car is mostly complete minus Carb, intake, kickdown bracket and switch. Car is auto TH400. Car is a 10D car (Oct. last week) I need to find the original equipment. Currently sporting a Edelbrock intake w/ 600 carb. and no passing gear. Where would I find the original carb and or what carb actually would of come on the car?? The other parts I need to locate as well.
Mike Sep 29th, 08, 2:41 PM Which 396 ?
husky100 Sep 29th, 08, 9:29 PM 325 HP is what I found by the numbers. Hope this helps
f14tomcat Sep 29th, 08, 10:38 PM Look on E-BAY for the intake, I have seen several in the last couple of weeks, you should be able to pick one up for $100-$150, there is a differnce between the Holley and the Q-jet, they will be stamped which carb goes on the intake.
husky100 Sep 30th, 08, 8:10 PM Is there a way to tell what carb the car should of had by numbers?? I have all the numbers off the block, firewall, door jamb etc...
RT468 Sep 30th, 08, 9:33 PM Not an authority on the matter, but for what it's worth I had thought the cast iron high rise for the Holley was for 360 horse in 66,350 horse in 67,or 385 horse 427 in passenger cars.If I remember correctly there was a post saying that 325 horse applications could have either the Holley or Quadrajet and that the Holley was the more common of the two intakes.Personally have seen more quadrajet intakes on restored cars though.I do have three factory high rise intakes for the Holley application, the closest to your cars build date being the end of March 67.Too far off to technically be correct for October date of the car.If all other search venues fail and you're interested let me know, could probably save shipping but don't have the carb or kickdown.
husky100 Oct 1st, 08, 3:31 PM I was thinking the quadrajet also. We bought this car from the original owner in 68/69 about 2 yrs after I was born. Then my mom divorced and sold the car and just recently found it after a long search for the guy who bought it. Kind of a neat story. After not finding the guy who bought it she all but gave up. She had some property in Florida and had listed it for sale. A guy called her about the property and she told him to stop by her house here in Cecil County MD. While giving the guy directions he proceeded to tell her that he was on that road 30 years ago and had bought a car from a woman who needed money as she was getting divorced. My mom asked him if he still had the car and he did so a trade was made. He never did anything with the car and the whole time she had been driving past it on her way to work for the 30 years. It was parked behind his garage. Mom has since remarried and her husband wants to give her back her competed 67 Chevelle SS. We are almost there just need a couple parts.
f14tomcat Oct 1st, 08, 6:03 PM That is a cool story, I hope you can find the parts you need.

husky100 Oct 1st, 08, 7:48 PM Thanks for the numbers. Carlisle is the weekend, maybe a good place to start. I will also be checking ebay.
husky100 Oct 6th, 08, 11:21 AM As my luck would have it, I ended up helping out my neighbor replace his well pump and other plumbing parts. So I will be checking ebay and other sites for the needed parts. Would still like to know for sure what carb came on the car.
