I was hoping to use a mechanical fuel pump to keep things simple, but I am not sure about the block for a mechanical pump. I dont think a mechanical fuel pump will work on a 1998 vortec block or any other vortec for that matter. Am I stuck using a electric fuel pump ? or is there any mechanical pump that will work for my application. I appreciate any info!

If you are running FI then you need an electric pump. If you are giong to a carb. then you can run a mechanical pump, if there is a provision for one on the block.

The outer part is there, usually the holes are even drilled and tapped, but the hole for the rod is not drilled. You would also need a hyd roller cam that has the fuel pump lobe on it too. You could always use electric plumbed through a dummy machanical body if that's important.
