: Comp XE lobes
novadude Mar 30th, 04, 1:25 PM What is the general opinion of the Comp XE cams? I have heard they are the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I have also heard that they are too aggresive, and that comp is really pushing the limits of "practical" cam design.
If these agressive lobes are so wonderful, how come every company is not mimicking the XE grinds?
Patrick O'Rourke Mar 30th, 04, 2:30 PM I've had one in my motor for nearly 3 years now, I'm satisfied, but then I like Comp products.
USFATL Mar 30th, 04, 2:46 PM XE284H here I love it. Makes real good power in my little rat.
Regards,
Jinks Mar 30th, 04, 2:48 PM ive run an xe274 and xe294 love them both. Great idle and awesome response. I have run them both with the stock stall and they drive great still. ( 3000 stall needed my ass heh )
70BB Mar 30th, 04, 2:52 PM .........and on the other hand,my 454 has ate (2)XE284's in (2) months. I 'm not blaming the cam specifically, but I got another block and a Lunati solid roller. For the sake of my wallet and sanity this better work.
Georgia69 Mar 30th, 04, 3:31 PM I'm running the XE262H, and I think it is a good blend of performance and streetability. It's been in the motor three years now and gets driven a lot, with no durability issues. I am planning a Comp XS262S solid for my next build up.
USFATL Mar 30th, 04, 3:39 PM Not to steal the post, but....
Mike, are you going to go to "The Blast From The Fast Past" car show this weekend?
Regards,
64postie Mar 30th, 04, 4:02 PM I run the xe276hr its only been in one season but it has lots of bottom end tq. Sure makes the little smallblock screeeem! :D
blaster Mar 30th, 04, 4:39 PM I run the xe262 in 1 chevelle and im about to run the xe 274 in the other. The xe262 has been in for over 2 years and i like it. Tons of torque and stock stall.
gared69 Mar 30th, 04, 4:46 PM XE284H in my car runs good.
Bad Rat 414 Mar 30th, 04, 4:48 PM I called Comp cams today and asked about the EX284H for my set up and he told me with 10.4:1, I might run into detonation problems (pinging). Is this guy nuts? I've never heard of that. Tha cam calls for at least 9.5:1.
Whittaker Mar 30th, 04, 5:14 PM Comp told me the same about detonation at 10:1 and reccomended the Comp 280H over my 274 XE. It has to do with the XE making more cylinder pressure they said. I liked the XE it seemed to rev faster. I may go back to it or to a UD Lunati grind.
blaster Mar 30th, 04, 6:58 PM I run 10:1 speedpros with my xe 262 with small chambered(58cc) corvette aluminum heads and i dont get pinging. I do run 2 gallons of race fuel per tankful usually during hot months just for peace of mind.
Lonnie67 Mar 30th, 04, 6:59 PM I put a XE274 w/1.6 rockers in my 383 mid 1999. I put about 8K miles on car a year. Hit my best ET last month. It is as noisy as a solid though.
HOTRODSRJ Mar 30th, 04, 7:16 PM You guys being told about detonation pay attention to doing your dynamic compression ratio homework.
While the static CR is about the actual measurements, some cams may give you too much cylinder pressure. Check this out http://cochise.uia.net/pkelley2/DynamicCR.html for more information. A larger duration cam will reduce cylinder pressure which means less DCR for less likelihood of detonation.
Nickel333 Mar 30th, 04, 8:21 PM comp is saying it might detonate to cover there ass because who knows what kind of yayhoo is putting that cam in. I run a legitimate 11.1:1 {according to pat kelleys Calc} and the nova's full of 89 octane right now, but i have a lower DCR.
NOW I wouldnt have a comp XE if somone payed me. Yes the lobe intensity is higher "numerically lower" and that will make more power but at what cost???? Valvetrain life? hydraulic cams sounding like solids because the valves slam shut? Lots of cams that go flat either because of 1. The cam or 2. that god awful excuse for break in lube they give you. Take your pick. Its your call im just telling you my opinion.
knudsonm Mar 30th, 04, 8:23 PM my XE274 worked pretty good. they are noisy though. I thought I had a bad lifter for the longest time due to it sounding like a solid.
Twilightoptics Mar 30th, 04, 8:26 PM I put my XE262 through hell and back and it looks brand new when I took it out in favor of a Harold special with the freshened motor.
By Hell I mean I had to crank the engine so long to get it started the battery died, I used the comp lube, broken heads, bad rings, etc.
It had lots of low end and thats what I like. I hate it when even with a big stall, you gotta wait for a few hundred RPM before the thing MOVES like it should.
ratuned Mar 31st, 04, 4:24 PM i currently run a 10-1 454 with the extreme 274H. the KB#207 pistons list the comp ratio at 10.2-1 with 119 cc heads. my heads were cc'd at 117. but the block was not decked. i also run a 830 dp and have the heat shield under the intake with the heat passages blocked. also run a unilite with stock curve with no vacuum advance and timing at 36 degrees. no noticable detonation using sunoco ultra 94. mike
