I have a 70 Vell, With a Q-Jet and a stock 70 LS-5 (FACTORY) Open element air cleaner and the H.E.I. NO Problem what so ever.
P.S.
Behind the dist. is a rubber plug that holds the inside insulation to the inside firewall, I cut a little off of this rubber tip and I ran the H.E.I. power wire from the fuse box. The wire is inside a rubber insulator and on the way to the fuse box Throw in a toggle switch. Why? You can give someone the keys and the car will crank BUT with the toggle turned OFF no power to the H.E.I.
Make sure you get a good Module for the H.E.I. and not a CHEEP one. If you buy a CHEEP module --BUY two, You will need it!
I put a Delco module in mine.............

Thanks for the info, the distributor I already have, got it from summit, but I dont have the air cleaner. I found a factory one but didn't want to buy it if it won't fit. It is a closed type with snorkle. The one I found is to far away to be able to try it.

the stock closed air cleaners are a crap shoot- if it takes a 14" A212CW Delco element, then it probably won't clear without a little hammer work. but an open element should clear.
as for how to wire it- i've always gone to a junkyard and grabbed an entire HEI power wire out of the first later model GM car or truck (late 70's- late 80's) i find that doesn't have an engine in it. no engine makes it really easy to get the wire out. i get the whole power wire- i pop the terminal out of the harness at the fuse block and replace the stock resistor wire in the harness of the car i'm working on. run it in the oem loom, and no one knows your car didn't come stock with an HEI. if you have a tach, grab the tach lead from the donor car or truck, as well.

Thanks, I will probably get an open air filter. Do you know a part number for it? I want to be able to use the breather hose on the right valve cover. I looked at Summit but can't see the under side. As for the wiring I already have the harness form M&H that already has the conversion.
